This morning, October 12, Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) held the Opening Ceremony for the New School Year 2024-2025 and Inauguration Ceremony of the SAHEP-VNUA Project, a WB-ODA loan project. General Secretary and President of Vietnam, H.E. To Lam, attended this remarkable event.

The ceremony was also attended by comrades including Tran Hong Ha, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister; Tran Luu Quang, member of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Economic Commission. Also attending were leaders of ministries, central agencies, departments, local provinces; representatives of embassies, international organizations in Vietnam; leaders of some universities etc.

Today is also special when VNUA turns into 68 years old (October 12, 1956 - October 12, 2024).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan, VNUA president, emphasized that over the past 68 years, the University has made constant efforts, overcoming series of difficulties and challenges to affirm itself as one of the leading universities in training high-quality human resources for the country, especially in the fields of agriculture and rural development. On each stage of the country's development, the University has always left very proud marks through its activities in training, scientific research and technology transfer, meeting the requirements of society and practice.

Prof. Dr. Lan also sincerely thanks the attention, support and trust of the Party, the State, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Education and Training, relevant agencies, international friends, authorities at all levels across the country, especially the Party Committee, the government and people of Hanoi City, Gia Lam District and Trau Quy Town, throughout the process of building and developing the University.

On behalf of the Party and State leaders, General Secretary and President of Vietnam, H.E. To Lam acknowledged great achievements that the agriculture and rural development sector has achieved in the past time, contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolutions of the Central Executive Committee and the Politburo on agriculture, farmers and rural areas, maintaining national food security, making an important contribution to ensuring global food security, and taking the lead in creating a circular, low-carbon, green growth agriculture. In that common achievement, there is an outstanding and comprehensive contribution from VNUA.

The General Secretary and President stated that our Party has repeatedly affirmed that education and training are the top national policies, and science and technology are key to the development and prosperity of the country. Therefore, the University must be an important entity in the national innovation system, meeting the requirements of the intellectual economy, circular economy and digital transformation.

The University must strive to not only be the country's leading training and research center but also a prestigious higher education institution in the region and the world, a center of innovation, a trusted address for national startups. The University needs to develop a comprehensive development project with a suitable roadmap to become a university following the model of advanced research universities in the world. Relevant ministries and branches are responsible for guiding and supporting the University in developing and organizing the effective implementation of the proposal.

He also pointed out that higher education institutions including VNUA must continue to implement university autonomy more substantially and at a new level, according to the criteria and practices of higher education in developed countries; ensure more comprehensive integration in higher education, but still imbued with Vietnamese culture, originating from the reality of the country and people of Vietnam. He requested MOET and relevant ministries and branches to continue researching and promulgating policies for universities to fully and synchronously implement university autonomy, in order to quickly have a higher education system that can "stand shoulder to shoulder with the world powers".

“University autonomy does not mean that the State does not invest, but invests according to the "Output Results" that educational institutions commit to the State; "In particular, priority should be given to placing orders and assigning tasks areas that are difficult to socialize and less attractive, but which the country really needs and are our strengths, such as agriculture, forestry and fishery," the General Secretary and President noted.

In the 2024-2025 school year, VNUA welcomes more than 6,000 new students. The total of 20,000 students are studying diligently in lecture halls and laboratories with modern and convenient equipment.

The event is a motivation for the university staff and students to strive to compete in teaching and learning to achieve targeted goals in the new school year.
