On January 10, 2019, Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Vien, Chairman of VNUA’s Board of Trustees, hosted the welcome meeting with Prof. Richard E. Bilsborrow from Carolina Population Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (the USA). Participating in the meeting were representatives from the International Cooperation Office, leaders and international cooperation assistants of the Faculties of Land ManagementPolitical and Social SciencesEconomics and Rural DevelopmentAccounting and Business Management, and Environment.

At the welcome meeting, Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Vien highlighted VNUA’s figures and facts, and orientations for its development. Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Viet Long, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Office, continued with an introduction to the university and proposed cooperation in research, training and scholarships for students. The two parties also discussed how the USA partners should  help Vietnam’s agriculture in general and VNUA’s development in particular. Prof. Bilsborrow shared his studies in the fields of agriculture and forestry, rural development and environment.

After the meeting with VNUA’s leaders, Prof. Bilsborrow presented some of his recent research results on “Tropical deforestation in the Ecuadorian Amazon followed by my more recent research on the effects of tax incentive payments (PES) to increase forest cover in China and stimulate small farmers to modify their livelihoods” to lecturers, researchers and students of the university.

Prof. Bilsborrow presented his research in agriculture and forestry

VNUA’s lecturers and students were very interested in his presentation and raised various questions about issues of land use in agriculture and the forest cover rate in Ecuador, effects of socio-economic factors and forest planting subsidies on deforestation in China.

End of his visit, the two sides expressed their high expectation in developing cooperation in training and research between the two universities. Prof. Bilsborrow said he would seek funding to teach and develop joint research at VNUA and is looking forward to receiving suggestions and cooperation proposals from VNUA's scientists.
