Symposium on “Solutions to emerging and zoonotic diseases”

On the 25^th and 26^th of August, 2016, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), organized an international seminar entitled "Solutions to Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases". The seminar aimed to exchange and share experiences and research outputs towards building research collaborations in the field of controlling dangerous infectious diseases.

Attending the seminar were more than 70 representatives, including professors and researchers in the fields of infectious diseases and diseases of humans and animals, from universities and top research institutes of veterinary medicine in Japan, Korea, and Malaysia, among others, including the Japanese Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Tottori University, University of Miyazaki, Korea Research Institute of Disease Transmission between Animals and Humans, Green Cross Vaccine Corp., and Universiti Putra Malaysia. In addition, international organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Vietnam One Health University Network (VOHUN), also presented at the seminar.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan, President of VNUA, delivered the opening remarks and emphasized that 75% of dangerous infectious diseases in humans originate from animals. Therefore, forming connections and research collaborations to find solutions for disease control is essential in the context of international integration.

When assessing the role of VNUA in preventing and controlling dangerous infectious diseases in animals, Dr. Pawin Padungtod, Director of the Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), stated that as a leading training and research organization in the field of veterinary medicine under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, VNUA has played an important role in controlling diseases in animals through training, research, and technology transfer.

Transmission between Animals and Humans (Korea) 

Also, with witnesses from leaders of VNUA and international delegates, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (VNUA) and the Institute of Diseases Transmission between Animals and Humans (Korea) signed a cooperation agreement. Both sides committed to implementing a bilateral cooperation for research on disease transmission between animals and humans.

After the signing of the cooperation, 15 reports were presented in English on dangerous infectious diseases, such as avian flu, PRRS, diarrhea in pigs, etc., and measures to control the diseases and reduce losses caused by the diseases.

For closing the conference, Dr. Trinh Dinh Thau, on behalf of the Organizing Committee summarized the key points and presented gifts to the reporters. With the success of this conference, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, as well as VNUA, will get new opportunities for research cooperation in the context of international cooperation and integration. This conference is a starting point for a chain of scientific research activities towards the 60th anniversary of VNUA’s establishment.
