- Abstract:
Farm production and natural forest extraction remain principal livelihood strategies of local people in many rural areas of the developing world. In this paper, we apply stochastic frontier analysis to evaluate farm production efficiency and simultaneous equations modelling to estimate the interrelationship between farm production efficiency and natural forest extraction. We use a two-year panel dataset of 430 rural households in Stung Treng province of Cambodia. We find that natural forest extraction is decreasing in farm production efficiency. Our results suggest that improving farm production efficiency, via the promotion of rural education and privatization of farm land, should be considered an integral component of natural forest conservation policy.

- Abstract:
Two porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) strains (Binh21 and HaNoi6) were isolated from two pig farms in North Vietnam. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete
genomes and the Spike and Membrane genes revealed that the two Vietnam PDCoVs belong to the same lineage as PDCoVs from Thailand and Laos; however, the N genes belonged to the same lineage as PDCoVs from the USA, Korea, China, and Hong Kong. The recombination detection program subsequently identified the major parent (S5011 strain) and minor parent (HKU15-44 strain) of the two Vietnam PDCoV strains (p < 0.01).

- Abstract:
We define a monodromy, directly from the spectrum of small non-selfadjoint perturbations of a selfadjoint semiclassical operator with two degrees of freedom, which is classically integrable. It is a combinatorial invariant that obstructs globally the existence of lattice structure of the spectrum, in the semiclassical limit. Moreover this spectral monodromy allows to recover a topological invariant (the classical monodromy) of the corresponding integrable system.

- Title: Degradation of β-casomorphins and identification of degradation products during yoghurt processing using liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry
- Journal: Food Research International
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Đức Doan
- Authors: Nguyễn Đức Doan, Francesco Busetti, Stuart Johnson, Vicky Solah
- Abstract:
Liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was used to investigate the degradation of β-casomorphin 5 (β-CM5) and β-casomorphin 7 (β-CM7) by Streptococcus thermophilus and/or Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, and to identify the degradation products forming during yoghurt processing. Bovine UHT milk was fermented with: (i) a single strain of L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, (ii) a single strain of S. thermophilus and (iii) the mixture of S. thermophilus and L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus to pH 4.5 and then stored at 4 °C for 1 and 7 days. Results showed that L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus and/or S. thermophilus completely degraded β-CM5 and β-CM7 upon fermentation to pH 4.5 and degradation products were significantly influenced by bacteria strains and storage time. Four peptides, β-CNf60–61 (YP), β-CNf62–63 (FP), β-CNf64–66 (GPI) and β-CNf62–66 (FPGPI) were tentatively identified through high resolution MS/MS experiments; however, it was not possible to confirm if either milk protein or β-casomorphins was a source releasing these peptides. Nonetheless, in this study peptides YP and GPI were released by L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus. This is the first time GPI has been identified and thus future investigation of its bioactivity is warranted.

- Title: Acquiring qualified samples for RANSAC using geometrical constraints
- Journal: Pattern Recognition Letters, Elsevier

- Authors: Van-Hung Le, Hai Vu, Thi-Thuy Nguyen, Thi-Lan Le, Thanh-Hai Tran
- Abstract:
Estimating parameters of a geometrical model from 3-D point cloud data is an important problem in computer vision. Random sample consensus (RANSAC) and its variations have been proposed for the estimation of the models parameters. However, RANSAC is computationally expensive and the problem is challenging when the measured 3-D data contain noise and outliers. This paper presents an efficient sampling technique for RANSAC, in which geometrical constraints are utilized for selecting good samples for a robust estimation. The constraints are based on two predefined criteria. First, the samples must ensure being consistent with the estimated model; second, the selected samples must satisfy explicit geometrical constraints of the interested objects. The proposed approach is wrapped as a robust estimator, named GCSAC (Geometrical Constraint SAmple Consensus), for estimating a cylindrical object from a 3-D point cloud. Extensive experiments on various data sets show that our method outperforms other robust estimators (e.g. MLESAC) tested in term of both precision of the estimated model and computational time. The implementations and evaluation datasets used in this paper are made publicly available.

- Authors: Truong Dinh Hoai, Kyoka Mitomi, Issei Nishiki, Terutoyo Yoshida
- Abstract:
This study was conducted to isolate and characterize a bacteriophage of a newly emerging pathogen, Weissella ceti, which causes weissellosis outbreaks of intensively farmed rainbow trout worldwide. The phage appeared together with the cultured Weissella ceti during isolation of pathogen from kidney of diseased rainbow trout. The morphological, physiological, proteomic and lytic spectrum were characterized. This phage, named PWc, belonged to the family Siphoviridae and possessed an isometric head (approximately 65 nm in diameter) and a flexible, non-contractile tail of 170–180 nm in length. The latent time and burst size of PWc were approximately 25 min and 16 PFU/infected cells, respectively. The PWc was relatively stable over a wide range of temperatures and pH values and possessed a broad lytic spectrum, lysing all 36 tested W. ceti strains isolated from diseased rainbow trout in Japan. The protein profile of the phage was obtained using SDS-PAGE analysis, and the potential packaging strategy was determined based on terminase large subunit sequence analysis. This is the first study to investigate a lytic bacteriophage of a newly emerging pathogen W. ceti that causes infectious disease in rainbow trout.

- Title: Characterization and Genetic Structure of a Tospovirus Causing Chlorotic Ring Spots and Chlorosis Disease on Peanut; Comparison with Iranian and Polish Populations of Tomato yellow fruit ring virus
- Journal: Plant Disease
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Đức Huy
- Authors: Ali Reza Golnaraghi, Nooh Shahraeen, H. D. Nguyen
- Abstract:
A Tospovirus was isolated from peanut plants showing chlorotic ring spots and chlorosis, and identified as Tomato yellow fruit ring virus (TYFRV) on the basis of its biological, serological and molecular properties. In host range studies, a broad range of indicator plants was infected by the five isolates studied; all the isolates systemically infected Nicotiana tabacum cultivars, and so, they were classified into the N host-infecting type isolates of the virus. These isolates strongly reacted with TYFRV antibodies, but not with the specific antibodies of other tospoviruses tested. Recombination analyses showed that the nucleoprotein gene of the peanut isolates and other isolates studied were non-recombinant. In phylogenetic trees, the virus isolates were clustered in three genogroups: IRN-1, IRN-2 and a new group, namely POL; the peanut isolates fell into IRN-2 group. Multiple sequence alignments showed some genogroup-specific amino acid substitutions among the virus isolates studied. The results revealed the presence of negative selection in TYFRV populations. Also, the Iranian populations had higher nucleotide diversity as compared with the Polish population. Genetic differentiation and gene flow analyses indicated that the populations from Iran and Poland, and those belonging to different genogroups were partial differentiated populations. Our findings seem to suggest that there has been frequent gene flow between some populations of the virus in the mid-Eurasia of Iran.

- Abstract:
The liver plays a central role in metabolism and produces important hormones. Hepatic estrogen receptors and the release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) are critical links between liver function and the reproductive system. However, the role of liver in pubertal development is not fully understood. To explore this question, we applied transcriptomic analyses to liver samples of pre- and post-pubertal Brahman heifers and identified differentially expressed (DE) genes and genes encoding transcription factors (TFs). Differential expression of genes suggests potential biological mechanisms and pathways linking liver function to puberty. The analyses identified 452 DE genes and 82 TF with significant contribution to differential gene expression by using a regulatory impact factor metric. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor was observed as the most down-regulated gene (P = 0.003) in post-pubertal heifers and we propose this gene influences pubertal development in Brahman heifers. Additionally, co-expression network analysis provided evidence for three TF as key regulators of liver function during pubertal development: the signal transducer and activator of transcription 6, PBX homeobox 2, and polybromo 1. Pathway enrichment analysis identified transforming growth factor-beta and Wnt signaling pathways as significant annotation terms for the list of DE genes and TF in the co-expression network. Molecular information regarding genes and pathways described in this work are important to further our understanding of puberty onset in Brahman heifers.

- Abstract:
Abstract
Supplementation of prebiotic carbohydrates can act as a potent immunomodulator and have the efficacy to induce immune-related genes which are involved in host defense. Pure β-1,4-mannobiose (MNB) showed activation of prophenoloxidase system of shrimp hemocytes in vitro. The resistance of kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus against Vibrio parahaemolyticus was examined after the shrimp were fed with 0 (control), 0.02, 0.2, and 2% MNB supplemented diets. The results showed significantly higher survival rates in MNB supplemented shrimp than those of the control one from 2 to 12 days post challenge. In another experiment, the hemocyte count, ROS production, phagocytic, phenoloxidase and bactericidal activities, and expression of immune-related genes were investigated in the control and MNB supplemented groups at day 1, 4, 6, 8 and 11 of the feeding. These immune parameters were significantly enhanced in MNB supplemented groups. Furthermore, the gene expression analysis showed that transcripts of lysozyme, crustin, penaeidin and TNF were significantly up-regulated in hemolymph, lymphoid organs and intestines of MNB treated shrimp. Overall, the results provided evidence that MNB supplementation could improve the immune response and increase shrimp resistance against V. parahaemolyticus infection.

- Abstract:
In 2015, a novel circovirus (Porcine circovirus 3, PCV3) was detected for the first time from pigs suffered from porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome and reproductive failure. Since then, PCV3 has been reported in several pig producing countries. This study was carried out in order to investigate the presence and further genetic characterization of PCV3 in the pig populations in northern Vietnam. The screening PCR detected the presence of PCV3 in 6 out of 135 samples (4.44%) which were collected from seven northern provinces in 2011 and 2016-2017. The capsid-coding gene (ORF2, 645 nucleotides in length) was successfully sequenced from 5 out of 6 field strains. Compared to a highly diverse PCV3 strain (GD2016-1, KY421347) 5 Vietnamese PCV3 strains contained 39 point nucleotide mutations and 9 of those were non-synonymous. The Bayesian phylogenetic analysis on the basic of ORF2 revealed that PCV3 evolved at a comparable evolutionary rate of the pathogenic PCV2 (2.284 × 10-3 and 1.440 × 10-3, respectively). Besides, this analysis suggested PCV3 could be separated into PCV3a and PCV3b groups, of which the majority of Vietnamese PCV3 strains belong to PCV3a (sub-cluster a1).

- Title: Towards global applicability? Erosion source discrimination across catchments using compound-specific δ13 C isotopes

- Abstract:
Accurate identification of soil erosion hot spots across catchments of different sizes and agro-ecologies through the use of conventional tracing techniques has proven challenging. Since this problem hinders implementation of precise soil conservation measures by land managers and decision-making bodies, novel evidence-based techniques are needed. To meet this need, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria) initiated the Coordinated Research Project entitled “Integrated Isotopic Approaches for an Area-wide Precision Conservation to Control the Impacts of Agricultural Practices on Land Degradation and Soil Erosion – D1.20.11” in 2008. This project emphasized the application of isotopic approaches to identify hot spots of land degradation
in agricultural catchments to develop effective soil conservation measures. As one key outcome of this project, we present here an aligned protocol to explore the potential of compound-specific stable isotope (CSSI) analysis of individual fatty acids (FA) combined with Bayesian statistics to discriminate sediment sources across six catchments of different sizes and agro-ecologies. The global applicability of the CSSI approach was first tested on the basis of major land use categories (i.e., forest, cultivated and non-cultivated land) as potential sediment sources in the studied catchments. These land use categories were then further resolved into specific land use types (e.g., cassava and maize fields, orchards) to assess the potential resolution threshold of the CSSI technique.
In a final step, the influence of miscellaneous sources (e.g., roads, channel banks) that had the potential to distort proportional contributions to sediment deposition was assessed. The introduced aligned protocol of the CSSI technique was applied to discriminate individual erosion sources based on land use types of tested catchments. Merging catchment-specific land use types with broader land use categories made it possible to determine intercatchment comparisons of isotopic signatures due to significant differences in δ13C values of fatty acids when cultivated land was present. Notably, no correlations were found between different catchment sizes, agro-ecologies, number and type of land use types, or soil organic carbon concentrations and the number of significant δ13C fatty acid values of the various land use types. Thus, we propose that the presented CSSI technique has the potential to identify soil erosion hot spots in contrasting catchments of different sizes and agro-ecologies.

- Title: Integrating compound-specific δ13 C isotopes and fallout radionuclides to retrace land use type-specific net erosion rates in a small tropical catchment exposed to intense land use change
- Journal: Geoderma
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thanh Lâm
- Authors: Christian Brandt, Moncef Benmansour, Leander Walza, Lam T. Nguyen, Georg Cadischa, Frank Raschea
- Abstract:
Retracing net erosion rates linked to land use change in tropical agricultural catchments dominated by smallholder farmers is challenging, due largely to catchment heterogeneity and uncontrolled farming practices. To tackle this problem and to complement a preceding study (Brandt et al., 2016), we introduce here an advanced approach that integrates compound-specific δ13C isotopes (CSSI) and fallout radionuclides (FRN), Excess lead-210 (210Pbex) and Cesium-137 (137Cs) to estimate past net erosion rates of dominant land use types in themountainous catchment Chieng Khoi (207 ha, Northwest Vietnam). Spatially-integrated topsoil (0 to 2 cm)samples of dominant land use types (e.g., protected and secondary forests, teak, fruit orchards, maize, cassava)were collected from at least three discrete plots of each land use type within the upland area (i.e., erosion sites)of the studied catchment. In the corresponding lowland area, a representative sediment profile was localized and divided into sections of 2 to 4 cm for CSSI and FRN analysis. Samples for FRN reference data were taken from undisturbed areas in close proximity. At a soil deposition site near a lakeshore,
210 Pb ex data determined the age and sediment accumulation rates of 19 sediment layers to a depth of 38 cm. Based on 210 Pbex activity, maximum
sediment accumulation rates of 127 t ha−1 y−1 were calculated, corresponding to erosion rates of about 16 t ha−1 y−1
for the total catchment area. CSSI data confirmed that maize and cassava were the most important erosion sources during a period of dramatic land use change (1987 to 2004), when forests were cleared and high-yielding maize hybrids were introduced. Based on integrated FRN and CSSI data, net erosion rates of maize and cassava reached maximum rates of 4.8 t ha−1, y−1, (maize), 6.2 t ha−1, y−1 (cassava). This major finding verified the potential of integrating FRN and CSSI to accurately estimate land use type-specific net erosion rates. In conclusion, determining past sediment budgets for specific land use types provides insight into the accelerating impact of specific land use change on soil retrogression and degradation. Such knowledge is of prime importance for effective soil conservation through evidence-based land management and decision making.

- Title: Identification of drought-induced genes in giant leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata)
- Journal: Trees- Springer
- Author from VNUA:Phạm Thị Dung
- Authors: Michael D. H. Honda · Kazue L. Ishihara · Dung T. Pham· Dulal Borthakur
- Abstract:
Abstract Leucaena leucocephala subspecies glabrata (leucaena), which is also known as ‘giant leucaena’, is a multipurpose tree legume that can be grown and maintained as a woody tree for wood and paper pulp production, or as a shrubby legume through repeated harvest of foliage for use as a fodder. Leucaena is naturally resistant to most biotic and abiotic stresses including drought. The objective of this research was to identify drought-responsive genes in leucaena seedlings through microarray and qRT-PCR analyses. Ten thousand cDNA sequences selected from a leucaena transcriptome were screened for higher expression in a 4 × 180 k microarray using RNA isolated from drought-treated and untreated leucaena seedlings. Microarray analysis identi ed 73 and 39 drought-responsive genes sequences that were upregulated in the root and shoot, respectively. qRT-PCR analyses con rmed the root- and shoot-speci c upregulation of some of the most highly expressed gene sequences identi ed in the microarray analysis. The proteins encoded by these genes could be grouped into four classes: (1) receptors that sense osmotic and oxidative stresses, (2) transcription factors, (3) degradation pathway enzymes, and (4) biosynthetic enzymes and structural proteins. The functions of these four classes of proteins can be used to explain the drought response in leucaena. The NB-LRR class of disease-resistance proteins may serve as receptors for detecting osmotic and oxi- dative stresses induced by drought, leading to induction of transcription factors such as zinc nger CCCH domain-containing protein and TCP14. As result, the genes for some degradative pathway enzymes, such as GDSL esterase/lipase, lipid acyl hydrolase patatin, and serine carboxypeptidase, were induced. Similarly, the expression of certain biosynthetic enzymes and structural proteins such as avonoid 3-O-galactosyl transferase, ca eoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase, 9-cis-epoxy carotenoid dioxygenase, β-amyrin synthase, pentatricopeptide-containing protein, GPI-anchored protein COBRA, and peroxin, were also induced. High expression of some of these drought-inducible genes in leucaena seedlings may be used as a selection criterion in future breeding programs for drought resistance in leucaena and other legumes.

- Author from VNUA:Kim Văn Vạn
- Authors: Hien Van Doan,, Seyed Hossein Hoseinifar, Chartchai Khanongnuch, Apinun Kanpiengjai, Kridsada Unban, Van Van Kim, Satawat Srichaiyo
- Abstract:
The investigation was conducted to evaluate the possible effects of singular or combined administration of hostassociated probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum N11 and Bacillus velezensis H3.1) on several innate-immune parameters, disease resistance, and growth performance of Nile tilapia, (O. niloticus). Tilapia fingerlings were assigned for te following diets: Diet 1 (0 - control), Diet 2 (107 CFU g−1 B. velezensis H3.1), Diet 3 (108 CFU g−1 L.
plantarum N11), and Diet 4 (107 CFU g−1 B. velezensis H3.1 + 108 CFU g−1 L. plantarum N11). At days 15 and 30 post feeding, skin mucus and innate immune parameters as well as growth performance were collected. The challenge test was conducted at the end of feeding trial (i.e 30 days post feeding). The results showed that dietary administration of Lactobacillus plantarum N11 and Bacillus velezensis H3.1 resulted in significant increase skin mucus lysozyme and peroxidase activities of the fish (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference was detected among supplemented groups (P > 0.05). For serum immunity, serum lysozyme activity of fish fed probiotics diets was significantly higher than the control group, except for fish fed B. velezensis H3.1, where no significant was observed when compared with the control (P > 0.05). Likewise, serum peroxidase, alternative complement, phagocytosis, and respiratory burst activities were significantly higher in treated groups compared to the control (P < 0.05). Also, the relative percent of survival (RPS) in L. plantarum N11 and B. velezensis H3.1, L. plantarum N11, and B. velezensis H3.1 treatments were 58.33%, 54.17%, 41.67%, respectively. Nonetheless, no significant differences were observed among supplemented groups regarding RPS (P > 0.05). However, dietary administration of host-associated probiotics remarkably improved the growth performance, specific growth rate, weight gain, final weight, and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05). The present results indicated that singular or combined administration Lactobacillus plantarum N11 and Bacillus velezensis H3.1 can be considered as beneficial feed additives for Nile tilapia.

- Title: Molecular characterization of US-like and Asian non-S INDEL strains of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) that circulated in Japan during 2013–2016 and PEDVs collected from recurrent outbreaks

- Abstract:
Since late 2013, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has reemerged in Japan and caused severe economic losses to the swine industry. Although PEDV vaccines have been used widely, the disease has swept rapidly across the county, and is commonly observed in PED-vaccinated farms, and has recurred in domestic herds. To better understand PEDVs responsible for the reemerging outbreaks in Japan, full-length spike (S), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) genes of 45 PEDVs collected in Japan during 2013–2016, were sequenced and analyzed.
Results
Phylogenetic analysis based on S gene sequences revealed that all the recent field PEDVs were genetically distinct from the classical Japanese strains, and were classified into three genotypes: North American (NA), S INDEL, and Asian non-S INDEL. Our data suggested a possibility that multiple parental PEDV strains were introduced into Japan from abroad at the same time or similar times. The newly identified Japanese strains showed the closest relationship to the US strains. Two sublineages of Japanese strains circulating in Japan were similar to two sublineages identified in the US, suggesting common ancestors for these strains. In comparison with two vaccine strains used in Japan, the field strains had various changes in epitope regions, glycosylation sites, and phosphorylation sites. These substitutions, particularly observed in epitope regions of the S (521, 553, 568, and 570), M (5), and N (123, 252, and 255) proteins, may have affected antigenicity and vaccine efficacy, resulting in an unsuccessful PEDV control. Sequence comparisons between PEDVs collected from primary and secondary outbreaks in three herds revealed that the disease has developed to an endemic stage in which PEDV could persist for nearly two years in the herds or local regions, causing subsequent epidemics.
Conclusions
These results elucidate the genetic characteristics, origin, and molecular epidemiology of PEDVs circulating in Japan, as well as the PEDV strains causing recurrent outbreaks. This study provides a better insight into the PEDVs responsible for recent outbreaks in Japan, and could potentially help to develop measures for controlling and preventing the disease.

- Abstract:
Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour reported only in man, dogs and cats. A 20-month-old Japanese black fattening steer was presented with necrotic protruding skin masses over the left thoracic area and a 20 25 cm subcutaneous mass in the left abdominal area. Microscopical evaluation of the masses revealed cords of small to medium-sized round tumour cells with marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and clear and vacuolated cytoplasm, which were separated by a delicate fibrovascular stroma and arranged in a trabecular and nested pattern. Necropsy examination revealed multiple solid white nodular masses in the lungs. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for cytokeratin (CK) 20 and CKAE1/3 revealed focal perinuclear labelling of tumour cells. IHC for the neuroendocrine markers chromogranin A and neuron specific enolase, the neuroepithelial stem cell marker nestin and the hormonal markers adrenocorticotropic hormone and calcitonin revealed diffuse cytoplasmic labelling of all tumour cells. Ultrastructurally, the tumour cells contained few neurosecretory granules and abundant glycogen pools. The tumours were diagnosed as Merkel cell carcinoma with pulmonary metastases and this case represents the first such diagnosis in cattle.

- Abstract:
Chicken meats are considered as main sources associated with Salmonella infections in humans. In this study, lytic phages against Salmonella were isolated and examined for their efficacy to control Salmonella. Eighteen lytic phages were isolated from raw chicken skin and gizzard. Five phages belonging to Myoviridae and Siphoviridae families were characterized and selected for bacterial challenge tests. The treatment of raw chicken breast samples contaminated with S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium at 8 °C by the cocktail of five phages significantly reduced (P < 0.05) viable counts by 1.41 and 1.86 log CFU/piece, respectively. When incubated at 25 °C, the highest reductions of viable counts of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium in the phage-treated samples were 3.06 and 2.21 log CFU/piece, respectively (P < 0.05). These data suggested that the phages isolated from raw chicken meats are potential agents for controlling Salmonella in raw meats.

- Abstract:
Rainfed lowland rice fields are characterized by soil moisture fluctuations (SMF) and the presence of hardpan that impedes deep rooting and thus limits water extraction from deep soil layer during the periods of drought. In this study, we used rootboxes with three layers; shallow layer, artificial hardpan, and deep and wet layer below the hardpan, to evaluate differences in the plasticity of nodal roots elongation through the hardpan and promote root branching below the hardpan in response to SMF among four rice varieties; Sasanishiki, Habataki, Nipponbare and Kasalath. Experiments were conducted during the summer and autumn seasons. Plasticity was computed as the difference in root traits within each variety between the SMF and continuously well-watered treatments. In both experiments, Habataki consistently tended to exhibit higher root plasticity than the other three varieties by increasing number of nodal roots that penetrated the hardpan during rewatering period in SMF, when the soil moisture increased and penetration resistance decreased. This root plasticity then contributed to greater water use at the deeper soil during the subsequent drought period and overall shoot dry matter production. Habataki had significantly higher δ13C value in roots at deep layer than roots at the shallow and hardpan layers under SMF, which may indicate that these were relatively newly grown roots as a consequence of root plasticity. This study also indicates that CSSLs derived from Sasanishiki and Habataki varieties may be suitable for the analysis of QTLs associated with root plasticity expression in rainfed lowland with hardpan and experiencing SMF.

- Abstract:
In rainfed lowland rice ecosystem, rice plants are often exposed to alternating recurrences of waterlogging and drought due to erratic rainfall. Such soil moisture fluctuation (SMF) which is completely different from simple or progressive drought could be stressful for plant growth, thereby causing reduction in yield. Root plasticity is one of the key traits that play important roles for plant adaptation under such conditions. This study aimed to evaluate root plasticity expression and its functional roles in dry matter production and yield under SMF using Nipponbare, KDML 105 and three backcross inbred lines (BILs) and to identify QTL(s) associated with root traits in response to SMF at two growth stages using Nipponbare/KDML105 F2 plants. A BIL, G3-3 showed higher shoot dry matter production and yield than Nipponbare due to its greater ability to maintain stomatal conductance concomitant with greater root system development caused by promoted production of nodal and lateral roots under SMF. QTLs were identified for total nodal root length, total lateral root length, total root length, number of nodal roots, and branching index under SMF at vegetative and reproductive stages. The QTLs detected at vegetative and reproductive stages were different. We discuss here that relationship between root system of G3-3 and the detected QTLs. Therefore, G3-3 and the identified QTLs could be useful genetic materials in breeding program for improving the adaptation of rice plants in target rainfed lowland areas.

- Abstract:
This article describes current laws, regulations, guidelines, and principles pertaining to animals used for research, teaching, and testing in some countries of Southeast Asia region including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. There is no specific overarching legislation applied for animal welfare relevant directly to animals used for research, testing, and teaching in the region. All countries in the Southeast Asia subregion are members of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (the Terrestrial Code) sets out standards for the improvement of animal health and welfare and veterinary public health worldwide, including standards for safe international trade in terrestrial animals (mammals, birds, and bees) and their products. This is achieved through the detailing of animal health measures to be used by the veterinary authorities of importing and exporting countries to avoid the transfer of agents pathogenic for animals or humans, while avoiding unjustified trade barriers. In 2015, there was the publication of the Animal Welfare Act by the parliament of Malaysia and the Animals for Scientific Purposes Act by the Royal Thai Government. Recently, the Veterinary Law has come into effect in July 2016 marking a progress in animal welfare in Vietnam. There has been no recent development of any law pertaining to laboratory animals in Cambodia.

- Title: Plasticity in nodal root elongation through the hardpan triggered by rewatering during soil moisture fluctuation stress in rice
- Journal: scientific reports
- Author from VNUA:Trần Thị Thiêm
- Authors: Roel Rodriguez Suralta, Jonathan Manito Niones, Mana Kano-Nakata, Thiem Thi Tran, Shiro Mitsuya & Akira Yamauchi
- Abstract:
Rainfed lowland (RFL) rice fields have hardpans and experience soil moisture fluctuations (SMF) stress, which influence root system development. Here, we clarify the expression and timing of the plasticity in nodal root elongation through the hardpan under SMF and its contribution to shoot growth using a shallow-rooting IR64 and its deep-rooting introgression line, YTH304. Under SMF, soil moisture content had negative relationship with soil penetration resistance, regardless of hardpan bulk densities. YTH304 had greater root system below the hardpan than IR64 in hardpan with 1.50 but not in 1.70 g cm−3 bulk density (BD). YTH304 had greater plasticity in nodal root elongation through the hardpan than IR64 under SMF, which was clearly expressed during rewatering. YTH304 also had greater soil water uptake below the hardpan during drought and greater shoot growth than IR64. The results imply that deep root system development during SMF was due to the plasticity in nodal root elongation through the hardpan expressed during rewatering rather than during drought periods. This is against the long standing belief that active root elongation through the hardpan happens during drought. This also implies a need to revisit current root screening methods to identify rice lines with good hardpan penetration ability.

- Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate by-product production originating from artisan distillers of rice alcohol and its use as pig feed in three provinces (Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Bac Giang) of Northern Vietnam. A total of 120 rice alcohol producers classified by production scales (30 producers for Large-L, 45 producers for Medium-M and 45 producers for Small-S) were interviewed from January to August 2015. Additionally, sixty-three rice distiller’s by-product samples were collected from the study areas to determine their daily nutrient content according to one week storage time. The annual dry matter feedstuff production was estimated to 4.8, 3.0 and 2.1 tons per household for L, M and S scales, respectively (p<0.001). Swine herd size increased with the scale of household alcohol production (p<0.05). The proportion of rice distiller’s by-product in diet of swine lowered when turning from pregnant to lactating sows, and varied in fattening pigs. Rice distiller’s by-product was rich in high quality crude protein, copper and lactic acid but poor in dry matter. Its nutritive value remained stable over a week under ambient conditions. In conclusion, rice distiller’s by-product provides significant and stable amounts of nutrients in northern vietnamese pig production

ABSTRACT
Objectives: The objectives are aimed to investigate the antibacterial properties of five Vietnamese medicinal plants against acute hepatopancreatic
necrosis disease (AHPND)-caused bacterial pathogens, to verify their potentials to apply as a new treatment therapy.
Methods: Extracts from plants, such as Psidium guajava leaf, Piper betle L. leaf, Phyllanthus amarus leaf, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa seed, and Allium sativum bulb, were tested against three AHPND-caused bacteria. Agar infusion and broth dilution methods were employed to evaluate extract in vitro antibacterial effects, while experiments with cultured whiteleg shrimps were applied to access their safety when applied in vivo. High-performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was applied to identify components in the extracts.
Results: P. amanus and R. tomentosa extracts exerted the strongest inhibition on tested bacteria. Other extracts, including P. betel and P. guajava, were less effective, while A. sativum showed no effects against bacteria. In safety assessment experiments, we observed that only crude extracts of R. tomentosa and A. satium were safe, while others significantly reduced their survival rates. HPLC showed that extracts of high antibacterial
properties had rich phenol constituents. In addition, the phenolic profile of R. tomentosa showed the presence of piceatannol.
Conclusion: Considering both of antibacterial effects and safety properties altogether, we concluded that among the five examined plant materials of this study, R. tomentosa had the highest potential to apply in AHPND treatment, as only this plant showed the high effects on pathogenic bacteria while were still safe for host aquatic shrimps.

- Abstract:
This paper presents a theoretical model of the farmer’s decision to adopt alternative technologies in agriculture. The decision concerns the allocation of lands for old and new technology. We consider the case where organic production requires adoption of a new/alternative technology to be profitable. This paper suggests that an entirely theoretical exercise can illuminate parts of this complex issue which empirical work has not been able to reach. We show the importance of (1) the available quantity of land devoted to agriculture, (2) the productivity of the new/alternative technology, (3) the incentive mechanism and finally, (4) the constraints on output of the new/alternative technology. The results of this article are not confined to the agricultural sector. The insights apply to other technology decisions.

- Abstract:
Larvae of the Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) must cope with 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA), a major toxic allelochemical present in its host plant, maize Zea mays L. UDP-glucosyltransferase (UGT), which conjugates glucose to various lipophilic toxic compounds and thereby makes them more hydrophilic for easier excretion, has been suggested to be involved in the detoxification of DIMBOA in several insects. Our previous in vitro assays using O. furnacalis midgut homogenates demonstrated that DIMBOA was catabolized only when UDP-glucose, a glucose donor for UGT activity, was included in the reaction mixture; however, DIMBOA glucoside, the expected product of UGT activity, was only detected in trace amounts in assay products. The present study revealed that DIMBOA glucoside was produced, but was immediately degraded by unidentified enzymes in the midgut homogenate that do not require UDP-glucose for their activities, suggesting the presence of a novel route for DIMBOA catabolism in O. furnacalis.

- Abstract:
Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture (IAA) is characteristic with diversity of small-scale production systems in the Red River Delta, Vietnam where most integrated aquaculture systems are closely associated to the VAC model, an ecosystem production that three components: garden (V), pond (A) and livestock pen (C) are integrated. These VAC systems effectively use all the available land, air, water and solar energy resources, and also effectively recycle by-products and waste for providing diversified agricultural products to meet the complex nutritional demands of rural communities. The IAA systems are dynamic, diverse and subject to economic and environmental changes. By investigating 167 aquaculture households, the traditional VAC, New VAC, Animal Fish (AF) and Commercial Fish (FS) systems are identified as four existing IAA systems. This paper presents the main characteristics and economic efficiency of these IAA systems. The study’s results indicate clear evidence that the traditional VAC system and New VAC system are the most efficient and effective models. The findings of this study have shed light on the important role of integrated aquaculture systems to food security and economic development of households and local communities. The VAC systems are likely to propose for improving household food security and developing the local economy.

- Abstract:
Freshwater aquaculture production systems are closely related to integrated Agriculture Aquaculture systems. The systems are tradi–tionally integrated with crop production, horticulture, and livestock husbandry. Improved aquaculture systems are currently able to not only improve the nutrients of local farmers’ diets and economic conditions, but are also able to create employment opportunities and lead to better resource-utilization and rural development. This paper aims to present the changes in food systems affected by the rapidly developing freshwater aquaculture in northern Vietnam. It will shed light on how the aquaculture system play various roles in supporting agrarian livelihoods, their relationship to well-being, and food security using a clear example of smail-scale aquaculture in a province of the Red River Delta. The challenges and opportu-nities presented to small-scale producers and culture systems are assessed, and the likely futureof small-scale freshwater production systems is discussed and forecast.
Combining historical, adaptive, and systematic approaches, the study revealed the features and characteristics of inland aquaculture systems at the household level over a decade of the evolutionary process (1977-2015). By investigating 151 aquaculture households in two representative districts of the region, the three existing sys-tems are identified: VAC system (23%) (whereby V=vuon-gardens (horticulture), A=Ao-ponds (aquaculture) and C=chuong-animail sheds/pens (livestock husbandry)); aquaculture/livestock (AF) sys-tem (43%); and the commercially intensive fish culture (FS) system (34%). Beyond the positive benefits to the food system and rural development, potential considerably exists for further aquaculture integration within VAC systems in the region, which will contrib-ute to poverty reduction and improvement of the livelihoods of small-scale rural farmers.

- Authors: Nguyễn Thái Tùng
- Abstract:
Performance appraisals have undergone radical changes over the last several decades, but a lack of theoretical progress has sparked an academic interest in the theory underlying effective performance appraisals. Many researchers have condemned performance appraisals as destined for collapse and plenty of companies have abandoned their use due to a lack of efficacy in actually motivating employees and evaluating performance. This can be traced back to a lack of training for managers, who struggle to let go of their own biases, but also the actual evaluation criteria. Improving the effectiveness of performance assessments means using objective measures of competency and simplification of existing systems, including more frequent and relevant feedback and coaching that focuses on employees’ strengths for the future.

- Abstract:
Soil moisture fluctuation (SMF) stress due to erratic rainfall in rainfed lowland (RFL) rice ecosystems negatively affect production. Under such condition, root plasticity is one of the key traits that play important roles for plant adaptation. This study aimed to evaluate root plasticity expression and its functional roles in water uptake, dry matter production and yield under SMF using three chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) with major genetic background of KDML105 and a common substituted segment in chromosome 8. The CSSLs showed greater shoot dry matter production than KDML105 under SMF, which was attributed to the maintenance of stomatal conductance resulting in higher grain yield. The root system development based on total root length of the CSSLs were significantly higher than that of KDML105 due to the promoted production of nodal and lateral roots. These results implied that the common substituted segments in chromosome 8 of the 3 CSSLs may be responsible for the expression of their root plasticity under SMF and contributed to the increase in water uptake and consequently dry matter production and yield. These CSSLs could be used as a good source of genetic material for drought resistance breeding programs targeting rainfed lowland condition with fluctuating soil moisture environments and for further genetic studies to elucidate mechanisms underlying root plasticity.

- Abstract:
Modification of materials using ion beams has become a widespread route to improve or design materials for advanced applications, from ion doping for microelectronic devices to emulation of nuclear reactor environments. Yet, despite decades of studies, major issues regarding ion/solid interactions are not solved, one of them being the lattice-strain development process in irradiated crystals. In this work, we address this question using a consistent approach that combines x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements with both molecular dynamics (MD) and rate equation cluster dynamics (RECD) simulations. We investigate four distinct materials that differ notably in terms of crystalline structure and nature of the atomic bonding. We demonstrate that these materials exhibit a common behavior with respect to the strain development process. In fact, a strain build-up followed by a strain relaxation is observed in the four investigated cases. The strain variation is unambiguously ascribed to a change in the defect configuration, as revealed by MD simulations. Strain development is due to the clustering of interstitial defects into dislocation loops, while the strain release is associated with the disappearance of these loops through their integration into a network of dislocation lines. RECD calculations of strain depth profiles, which are in agreement with experimental data, indicate that the driving force for the change in the defect nature is the defect clustering process. This study paves the way for quantitative predictions of the microstructure changes in irradiated materials.

- Title: Nasal swab - a new tool for the detection of porcine respiratory disease complex in natural infected pigs
- Journal: Acta Scientific microbiology
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Trang
- Authors: Nguyen Thi Trang, Pham Hong Ngan, Nguyen Van Hop, Takuya Hirai
- Abstract:
The objectives of the present study were to determine whether nasal swab could be used for the detection of PRDC in naturally infected pigs. Fifteen piglets were used in this study. Serum, oral fluid, nasal swab, lung, tonsil and pulmonary lymph node were collected from each pig. Most common PRDC pathogens are porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), swine influenza virus (SIV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), Mycoplasma hyopneumonia, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia (APP) were examined by nested RT-PCR and multiplex PCR. Among 15 pigs, PRRSV was detected in nasal swabs from 12 pigs, oral fluids from 11 pigs, and serum from only 3 pigs. The ability to detect PRRS virus by nasal swab could be compare with tonsil and lungs which is consider as the first choice of sample. In addition, other pathogens such as PCV2, Mycoplasma and APP could also be detected in nasal swab. As many pathogens cause PRDC in pigs could be detected in nasal swabs, therefore nasal swab could be considered as a preferable sample for the detection of PRDC in pigs. PRRS virus was consistently detected in nasal swab it could be explained by the replication of PRRS virus in lymphoid tissue in the nasal cavity then shed into nasal discharge.

- Authors: Duong H. Nong , Christopher A. Lepczyk, Tomoaki Miura, Jefferson M. Fox
- Abstract:
Urbanization has been driven by various social, economic, and political factors around the world for centuries. Because urbanization continues unabated in many places, it is crucial to understand patterns of urbanization and their potential ecological and environmental impacts. Given this need, the objectives of our study were to quantify urban growth rates, growth modes, and resultant changes in the landscape pattern of urbanization in Hanoi, Vietnam from 1993 to 2010 and to evaluate the extent to which the process of urban growth in Hanoi conformed to the diffusion-coalescence theory. We analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns and dynamics of the built-up land in Hanoi using landscape expansion modes, spatial metrics, and a gradient approach. Urbanization was most pronounced in the periods of 2001–2006 and 2006–2010 at a distance of 10 to 35 km around the urban center. Over the 17 year period urban expansion in Hanoi was dominated by infilling and edge expansion growth modes. Our findings support the diffusion-coalescence theory of urbanization. The shift of the urban growth areas over time and the dynamic nature of the spatial metrics revealed important information about our understanding of the urban growth process and cycle. Furthermore, our findings can be used to evaluate urban planning policies and aid in urbanization issues in rapidly urbanizing countries.

- Title: Desalination of brackish water for agriculture: challenges and future perspectives for seawater intrusion areas in Vietnam
- Journal: Journal of Water Supply: Research and Technology
- Author from VNUA:Võ Hữu Công
- Authors: Võ Hữu Công
- Abstract:
This research aims to provide an overview of the seawater encroachment threat on agriculture in lowland areas and potential solutions for better practices. It was found that the Mekong river delta experiences severe impacts from climate change with more than 75% of provinces affected by seawater intrusion, of which Kien Giang, Ca Mau and Ben Tre provinces are the most influenced with 70% affected areas. The salinity of river water was observed in the range of 15–30 g/L in 2015; meanwhile, the strongest tolerated rice species reached ceiling values of 3–4 g/L. Emerging challenges were identified due to the uncertain upstream hydrological regime coupled with high levels of tide, field evaporation and water withdrawal. The development strategies of affected provinces are given on the modification of rice tolerant capacity, and modification to aquaculture in areas with high salinity, in which water purification is in urgent demand. Desalination technologies have been proposed with various innovations which are still not practical on a large scale. The desalination of seawater and brackish water by reverse osmosis, nano-filtration, electro-dialysis, ion-exchange resins, electrochemical processes and thermal distillation has been applied to agriculture. The advance reverse osmosis shows most potential because of its advances in treating performance, cost effectiveness and effective rejection of brine.

- Title: Gender roles in response to water scarcity for coffee production: A case study of an ethnic group in the Central Highland of Vietnam
- Journal: The Social Sciences
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Phượng Lê
- Authors: Nguyễn Phượng Lê
- Abstract:
In the Central Highlands, a key coffee growing area of Vietnam, water for coffee production is becoming increasingly scarce. Although central and local governments have implemented several mitigation strategies, only 19 percent of areas under coffee cultivation in the Central Highlands have access to state-constructed irrigation schemes. As a result, coffee producers have had to develop alternative strategies to cope with water scarcity. Based on quantitative and qualitative data collected from an ethic minority group of Ede in the Central Highlands, this research has indicated that farmers develop coping strategies for water scarcity based on their local skills, knowledge, and gender division of labor. Although differentiation of gender roles has been discussed in the literature for agricultural production, few studies have specifically focused on gender roles in construction and implemention of coping strategies in response to water scarcity. It was found that men played more significant roles in responding to water scarcity. However, women’s roles have significantly changed in coffee production in general and in cpoing with water scarcity in particular. To supplement the coping strategies of farmers to water scarcity, it is recommended that central and local governments provide more technical and financial support to male and female farmers.

- Title: Impact of wage employment in agriculture production on labor satisfaction in the Red River Delta Vietnam
- Journal: International Journal of Applied Business and Economic Research
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Hải Ninh
- Authors: Nguyen Thi Hai Ninh and Philippe Lebailly
- Abstract:
This paper attempts to identify the impact of wage employment in agricultural production on hired laborerd satisfaction in the Red River Delta of Vietnam. By analysing primary data collected from 150 hired laborers in Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, and Thai Binh provinces, we discover that hired laborers working for farm households are paid both in cash and in kind. During the employed period, hired laborers can receive two forms of wage in cash, daily wage for seasonal workers and monthly wage for long-term workers. Further, hired laborers also receive remuneration in kind such as drink, lunch, bonuses for overtime working, and Lunar New Year gifts. In order to determine factors effecting laborers satisfaction with work, the authors use Exploratory Factor Analysis and the results show that Cronbach’s Alfa coefficient of each group is more than 0.6. That indicates the use of 25 observation variations belonging to 5 factors in the study is suitable. Additionally, logistic model reports that wage, remuneration, working condition, workplace training and gender of employees have a statistically significant effect on job satisfaction of laborers. Of these factors, wage and remuneration report the stronger impact on hired laborers satisfaction. However, hired laborers in farm households state that their wage and remuneration are quite low in comparison with wage of workers in off-farm sectors. Therefore, including regulation on minimum wage and remuneration of hired laborers in agricultural production in to the Labor Law is necessary to enhance hired laborers satisfaction with wage employment.

- Title: Treatment of Highly Concentrated Waste Water by Acidification Followed by Ozonation
- Journal: Oil and gas technologies
- Author from VNUA:Đào Thị Thùy Linh
- Authors: Đào Thị Thùy Linh, Ngô Quý Quyền
- Abstract:
The paper presents the results of experimental studies on the possibility of highly concentrated waste water purification by acidification with subsequent ozonation. It was shown that acidification of this waste water to pH = 7 made it possible to destroy the stable initial emulsion, forming aqueous and hydrocarbon phases. At the same time, the degree of water phase purification reached 90.5%. Despite the high efficiency of separation of organic compounds from the studied waste water, the aqueous phase that was obtained after the addition of sulfuric acid to pH = 32222had sufficiently high COD value (36000 mgO /L). The use of the ozonation method at pH = 9 allowed the COD to be reduced up to 9000 mgO /L, while the total purification degree of two stages reached 97.6%.

- Title: The impact of Microfinance on household welfare in rural Vietnam: A case study in Phu Tho province
- Journal: Journal of the Faculty of AgricultureAgriculture, Kyushu university
- Author from VNUA:Đặng Thị Hải Yến
- Authors: DANG Thi Hai Yen, Teruaki NANSEKI, Yosuke CHOMEI
- Abstract:
In Vietnam, microfinance is regarded as one of the important measures to reduce poverty. However, empirical findings indicated that microfinance services can only meet less than half of the poor’s demand. About 3.6 poor and near poor households remained vulnerable to external shocks in 2012. Therefore, this study aims to examine whether and to what extent microfinance programs have helped to increase house- hold economic welfare in rural Vietnam. A survey was conducted in Phu Tho province – one of the poorest areas in the northern of Vietnam through face–to–face structured interviews with 257 respondents. The study employs a two stage least square regression model to deal with self–selection bias in the evaluation of the impact of microfinance on household welfare. The main outcome indicates that formal microfinance has helped to increase the household economic welfare in terms of per capita income, expenditure and value of non–land asset of the household with the coefficients are 0.002, 0.004, 0.003, respectively. Although the effect is small, microfinance has helped the better–off groups to increase their income and expenditure, while the poor groups increase their expenditure and acquire more assets, implying that the credit is distributed to other purpose besides income generating. However, these small impacts suggest a further study about the cost–effective of the microfinance programs.

- Title: Finite Element Simulation on Small Punch Test for Evaluation of J- integral for TRIP Steel
- Journal: Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering
- Author from VNUA:Phạm Thị Hằng (KCĐ)
- Authors: Pham Thi Hang, Iwamoto Takeshi
- Abstract:
The small punch test (SPT) has been recently successfully developed for the purpose of evaluate the fracture toughness in not only brittle but also ductile materials. It is considered that fracture toughness of materials can be estimated by means of the SPT based on the measurement of equivalent fracture strain in the SPT and its correlation with fracture toughness. Moreover, fracture toughness of TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity) steel was evaluated by J-integral by using pre-cracked specimen under three-point bending test in the past study. However, the value of J-integral is determined at a limited range of deformation rate in three-point bending test. Thus, fracture toughness of TRIP steel need to be evaluated by means of the SPT, especially at a relatively high deformation rate. Additionally, since the effect of strain-induced martensitic transformation during plastic deformation of TRIP steel coupled with a high increase of temperature is quite complicated, a computational work is indispensable. In this study, finite element simulations are performed for the SPT at various deflection rates and different sizes of specimen and puncher by an application of damage model for type-304 austenitic stainless steel, a kind of TRIP steel. The rate-sensitivity of fracture-mechanical characteristics is examined for different sizes of specimen and puncher. Furthermore, a relationship between equivalent fracture strain in the SPT and J-integral obtained from three-point bending test is challenged to be correlated.

- Title: Patent protection over traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources in Vietnam: the case of traditional medical knowledge
- Journal: Human and socio-environmental studies
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Minh Hạnh
- Authors: Nguyễn Thị Minh Hạnh
- Abstract:
The paper aims at examining how the protection of traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources (ATK) in general and traditional medical knowledge (TMK) in particular under the patent regime has been legally governed and enforced in Vietnam and to what extent such legal framework responses to theoretical and practical challenges associated with TMK protection in the patent law perspective. For those objectives, the paper investigates the related legal documents governing the subject matter with main focus on Law on Intellectual Property Right and Law on Biodiversity in Vietnam, assessing their workability in practice and thereby figuring out the chances and the challenges faced by the system in TMK protection. The paper concludes that the vague and unenforceable provisions, lack of collaboration between patent regime and access and benefit sharing (ABS) framework under the Law on Biodiversity, lack of mechanism for TMK holders to acquire and get benefit from patent right have contributed to the unworkability of the system. The paper also suggests that in the light of experiences from TMK-rich nations, patent rules should move towards the trend that supportively enforces the ABS regime and a patent-adaptive or sui generis framework should be built to achieve more feasible ways of protection if the current patent model fails to protect the legal interests of TMK holders.

- Abstract:
Abstract The genetic relationship of some Asiatic hard clam (Meretrix meretrix) based on mtDNA COI sequence analysis was investigated for populations collected in Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Nghe An provinces in Vietnam. In addition, this research also targets at species identification based on COI sequences. In total of 59 sequences analyzed, 19 sequences belonged to Meretrix meretrix species with Gen Bank accession number DQ399399.1. 17 sequences of M. meretrix were used for genetic relationship analysis among 3 populations. In which, 6 polymorphic sites, 3 parsimony informative sites and 4 haplotypes observed for the COI gene. Moderately genetic population diversity was observed, overall haplotype and nucleotide diversity were 0.476±0.233 and 0.00151±0.00069, respectively. Generally, genetic differentiation (FST) (FST < 0.15) was moderate. The genetic distance was rather low, which ranged from 0.001 (Thai Binh–NgheAn, Thai Binh–Nam Dinh populations) to 0.002 (Nam Dinh – Nghe An populations). The result of haplotype network constructing indicated that populations shared common haplotype and there was no specific isolation of the haplotypes of the populations. Hence, it showed M. meretrix populations had intimate genetic relationship. The result of phylogenic tree indicated that three M. meretrix populations (Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Nghe An) had a very small or no genetic variation among populations. - Title: Efficiency and adoption of organic tea production: Evidence from Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province, Vietnam
- Journal: Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science
- Author from VNUA:Tô Thế Nguyên
- Authors: To The Nguyen and Nguyen Anh Tuan
- Abstract:
This paper considers two empirical models. Initially, a stochastic frontier analysis is employed to investigate the technical efficiencies of tea growers in Vi Xuyen, Ha Giang. The findings indicate that the average technical efficiency of organic tea farmers in surveyed area was 65.2% which is lower than that of conventional tea growers (70.1%). Furthermore, the average age of tea plant has negative effect on technical efficiency of tea production, meanwhile, the remaining parameters have positive effects on the technical efficiency. Secondly, binary logistic regression analysis is used to determine the influencing factors of the tea farmer’s choice on organic tea production. The variables such as cultivation land, access to extension services, experience of household’s head and especially contract farming have large influences on the decision of tea farmers. The marginal effects after logit of the explanatory variables are -0.01, 0.63, -0.05, 0.71, respectively.

- Abstract:
ABSTRACT
Objectives: The objectives are aimed to investigate the antibacterial properties of five Vietnamese medicinal plants against Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND)-caused bacterial pathogens, in order to verify their potentials to apply as a new treatment therapy.
Methods: Extracts from plants, such as Psidium guajava leaf (P. guajava), Piper betle L. leaf (P. betle), Phyllanthus amarus leaf (P. amanus), Rhodomyrtus tomentosa seed (R. tomentosa) and Allium sativum bulb (A. sativum), were tested against three AHPND-caused bacteria. Agar infusion and broth dilution methods were employed to evaluate extract in vitro antibacterial effects, while experiments with cultured white-leg shrimps were applied to access their safety when applied in vivo. HPLC analysis were applied to identify components in the extracts.
Results: P. amanus and R. tomentosa extracts exerted the strongest inhibition on tested bacteria. Other extracts, including P. betel and P. guajava were less effective, while A. sativum showed no effects against bacteria. In safety assessment experiments, we observed that only crude extracts of R. tomentosa and A. satium were safe, while others significantly reduced their survival rates. HPLC showed that extracts of high antibacterial properties had rich phenol constituents. In addition, phenolic profile of R. tomentosa showed the presence of piceatannol.
Key words: medicinal plant; Rhodomyrtus tomentosa; antibacterial effect; acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease; AHPND; shrimp.

- Abstract:
Abstract
Electroporation is the technique of choice to introduce an exogenous gene into embryos for transgenic animal production. Although this technique is practical and effective, embryonic damage caused by electroporation treatment remains a major problem. This study was conducted to evaluate the optimal culture system for electroporation-treated porcine embryos by supplementation of chlorogenic acid (CGA), a potent antioxidant, during in vitro oocyte maturation. The oocytes were treated with various concentrations of CGA (0, 10, 50, and 100 μmol/L) through the duration of maturation for 44 hr. The treated oocytes were then fertilized, electroporated at 30 V/mm with five 1 msec unipolar pulses, and subsequently cultured in vitro until development into the blastocyst stage. Without electroporation, the treatment with 50 μmol/L CGA had useful effects on the maturation rate of oocytes, the total cell number, and the apoptotic nucleus indices of blastocysts. When the oocytes were electroporated after in vitro fertilization, the treatment with 50 μmol/L CGA supplementation significantly improved the rate of oocytes that developed into blastocysts and reduced the apoptotic nucleus indices (4.7% and 7.6, respectively) compared with those of the untreated group (1.4% and 13.0, respectively). These results suggested that supplementation with 50 μmol/L CGA during maturation improves porcine embryonic development and quality of electroporation-treated embryos.

- Abstract:
BACKGROUND:
Short-term storage is valuable method to reuse manipulated embryos.
OBJECTIVE:
The present study evaluated the effects of antifreeze protein (AFP) supplementation on the quality and development of in vitro-produced porcine morulae after short-term storage (24 h).
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
The morulae were stored with various concentrations of AFP type III for 24 h at 5, 15 and 25C.
RESULTS:
Supplementation of AFP type III (1.0 microgram per mL) improved the developmental competence of embryos stored at 25C. The proportions of DNA-fragmented nuclei in the blastocysts did not differ between the embryos stored at 25C and the control embryos without storage treatment. However, the developmental competence of embryos stored at hypothermic temperatures decreased relative to that of the control embryos.
CONCLUSION:
Supplementation of AFP type III (1.0 microgram per mL) maintained the quality of embryos stored at 25C, but did not have beneficial effects on the development of embryos stored at hypothermic temperatures.

- Abstract:
Economic impact assessments are increasingly important in the context of animal health and food safety, although much of the existing literature does not address the broader systems context in which disease transmission takes place. In this paper, we discuss the role of system dynamics modeling in addressing the value chain impacts associated with animal health and food safety issues. System dynamics methods hold promise as a means of capturing the complex feedbacks that exist between the biology, economics, and behavioral aspects of food safety and animal health systems. We provide a proof-of-concept of this approach in the context of food safety and animal health in the smallholder pig sector of Viet Nam.
Results highlight the important tradeoffs that exist between policy objectives and the costs required to achieve them.

- Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to improve the penetration during in vitro fertilization (IVF) of a frozen lot of epididymal sperm with a notoriously low fertilization ability of a Ban boar which is a native Vietnamese breed by optimizing different parameters of the IVF system. In Experiment 1, we determined that Pig-fertilization medium was superior medium to Tyrode’s albumin lactate pyruvate-polyvinyl alcohol medium for IVF and defined the optimum the sperm concentration (1 9 106 sperm/ml). In Experiment 2, we clarified that partial removal of cumulus cells from cumulus-oocyte complexes by hyaluronidase treatment before IVF enhances sperm penetration, whereas complete cumulus removal reduces penetration. Finally, in Experiment 3 the elevation of concentration of caffeine in Pig-fertilization medium from 2 to 5 mmol/L and the prolongation of the co-culture of gametes from 3 to 5 hr significantly increased the total penetration rate from 15.2% to over 50%. In conclusion, the combination of partial oocyte denudation, an elevated caffeine concentration in Pig-fertilization medium and an extended interval of IVF with using an optimized sperm concentration was a potent way to improve the fertilization results
for a frozen epididymal Ban sperm lot with low fertility.

- Abstract:
A 12-year-old intact male Welsh Corgi was presented with enlargement of the right scrotum. Both testicles were surgically removed and histopathologically examined.
On gross examination, white nodules were found in the epididymis and ductus deferens. Histopathologically, the nodules developed continuously from the tunica vaginalis testis of the right scrotum and consisted of spindle-shaped neoplastic cells that invaded the surrounding tissue. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were di usely positive for vimentin, cytokeratin and Wilms tumor-1 (WT-1). Based on these ndings, the tumor was diagnosed as sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The dog presented with respiratory distress 122 days after surgery and clinical examination found multiple metastatic lesions in the lung, abdominal lymph nodes and peritoneum. The dog died 144 days after surgery due to disease progression.

- Abstract:
A hard palate mass was surgically removed from an Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) and examined pathologically. The tumor consisted of sheets of small cells arranged in a tubular structure and cords or rosettes with fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for cytokeratin and neuron-specific enolase and partially positive for S-100 and doublecortin. These findings indicate that the tumor originated from the neuroectodermal tissue. Based on these findings, the tumor was classified as a neuromastoma (neuroepithelioma). Sensory cells located in the hard palate of the frog were considered to be the origin of the tumor. The frog died after going through 3 surgeries and experiencing difficulties closing its mouth.

- Abstract:
Abstract. The purpose of the paper is to develop an analytical investigation on free vibration of a simply-supported functionally-graded (FG) doubly-curved shell panels resting on elastic foundation in thermal environment. Heat conduction and temperature-dependent material properties are both taken into account. The temperature field considered is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the shell surface and varied in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent, and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory and applying the Hamilton’s principle, governing equations of motion are derived. The results of the study are compared with the available published literature. The numerical results obtained reveal that the material volume fraction index, geometrical parameters and temperature change have significant effects on natural frequencies of the FG doubly-curved shell panels.

- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Thanh Hà ( TY)
- Authors: Jesmin Akter, Md Zahorul Islam, Md Amzad Hossain,Shinsuke Kawabata, KensakuTakara, HaThiThanhNguyen, De-Xing Hou,Atsushi Miyamoto
- Abstract:
Objective
To clarify the underlying mechanism of turmeric, which is traditionally used as a medicinal plant for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, such as hypertension, and palpitations.
Methods
Methanol extracts of different turmeric were used. A tissue-organ-bath system was used to investigate the vasoactive effects of methanol extracts from 5 kinds of turmeric on isolated porcine basilar arteries. The arterial rings were suspended in physiological solution that was maintained at 37°C temperature with a continuous supply of 95% O2 and 5% CO2.
Results
All turmeric extracts (20–800μg/mL) induced concentration-dependent relaxation of the isolated porcine basilar artery pre-contracted with U46619 (1-5×10−9M) in arterial rings with or without endothelium. There were no significant differences in the relaxation induced by different turmeric or between the endothelium-intact and denuded arteries. In depolarized, Ca2+-free medium, the turmeric extracts inhibited CaCl2-induced contractions and caused a concentration-dependent rightward shift of the response curves. In addition, propranolol (anon-specificβ-adrenoceptor antagonist) slightly inhibited the relaxation induced by turmeric. In contrast, Nω-nitro-L-arginine, indomethacin, tetraethylammonium, glibenclamide and 4-aminopyridine did not affect turmeric-induced relaxation.
Conclusion
These results demonstrated that turmeric induced endothelium-independent relaxation of the porcine basilar artery, which may be due to the inhibition of extracellular and intracellular Ca2+ receptors and the partial inhibitionofβ-adrenergic receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells.

- Abstract:
To measure the difference of two fuzzy sets / intuitionistic sets, we can use the distance measure and dissimilarity measure between fuzzy sets. Characterization of distance/dissimilarity measure between fuzzy sets/intuitionistic fuzzy set is important as it has application in different areas: pattern recognition, image segmentation, and decision making. Picture fuzzy set (PFS) is a generalization of fuzzy set and intuitionistic set, so that it have many application. In this paper, we introduce concepts: difference between PFS-sets, distance measure and dissimilarity measure between picture fuzzy sets, and also provide the formulas for determining these values. We also present an application of dissimilarity measures in multi-attribute decision making.

- Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a new correlation coefficient between intuitionistic fuzzy sets. We then use this new result to compute some examples through which we find that it benefits from such an outcome with some well-known results in the literature. As in statistics with real variables, we refer to variance and covariance between two intuitionistic fuzzy sets. Then, we determined the formula for calculating the correlation coefficient based on the variance and covariance of the intuitionistic fuzzy set, the value of this correlation coefficient is in [−1,1]. Then, we develop this direction to build correlation coefficients between the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets and apply it in the pattern recognition problem.

- Authors: Truong Ha Thai Pham Thi Ngoc Nguyen Thi Lan Chu Thị Thanh Huong
- Abstract:
This study presents the high prevalence of antibiotic resistance of Salmonella and E. coli among selected pig farms and slaughterhouses in three provinces and two cities in North Vietnam. Salmonella and E. coli were mostly isolated from the sewages, anus feces, caecum, slaughterhouse’s floors, animal keeping floors, piggery floors, and carcass samples. The prevalence of Salmonella were 14.0% and 40.9%, and meanwhile E. coli were 68.2% and 67.2% of the collected samples at the pig farms and slaughterhouses, respectively. Among the 189 Salmonella isolates, 179 isolates were serotypeable belong to 10 serovars. Derby (21.7%) was the most common serovar, followed by Typhimurium (18.5%), Anatum (14.3%), Rissen (12.2%) and London (8.5%). The other serovars were Agona, Weltevreden, Meleagridis, Braenderup, and Chartres. Resistance to streptomycin (81.5% and 78.0%), tetracycline (78.3% and 89.0%), and ampicillin (55.6% and 64.0%) were most commonly observed in Salmonella and E. coli, respectively. Markedly lower resistance rates were observed in both of these bacteria for trimethoprim, nalidixic acid, ceftazidime, norfloxacin, nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin. Interestingly, decreased susceptibility to quinolones group (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and nalidixic acid) and third generation cephalosporins (ceftazidime) was commonly detected in the Salmonella and E. coli isolates. Moreover, resistance rates of the E. coli isolates to trimethoprime, norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin were significantly higher than those in the Salmonella isolates (p<0.05).

- Title: Evaluation of Loss of Rice Production due to Climate Change Reinforced Flood in Vietnam Using Hydrological Model and GIS
- Journal: EnvironmentAsia
- Author from VNUA:1. Phạm Quý Giang 2. Trần Trọng Phương
- Authors: Phạm Quý Giang
Trần Trọng Phương
- Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of future floods triggered by climate change reinforced extreme precipitation upon rice production with the case study of the highly rice cultivated District of Duc Tho in the North Central Region of Vietnam. 24 hour - extreme precipitation and its recurrence interval were identified by applying Probability Weighted Moment to Generalized Extreme Value distribution using historical daily observations and output of ensemble median of eight selected GCMs. The calculation was run under RCP2.6 with low climate sensitivity (best case) and RCP8.5 with high climate sensitivity (worst case). The predicted future precipitation data was then used for flood modeling and inundation calculation using hydrological models and GIS. An integrated method taking into account flood depth, inundation duration and crop calendar was then used for potential damage calculation. The results show that under the impact of climate change, extreme precipitation and floods would be intensified, and as floods become more intensified, deeper and longer, the loss they would cause to rice production would increase significantly. The loss in 2050s under the worst case would be 30.1% and under the best case would be 10.3% greater than that in the baseline period (1986-2005). The results of this study provide valuable scientific information for policy maker in long-term agricultural and infrastructural planning to minimize potential damages of future floods

- Title: Households’ Willingness-to-Pay for Wastewater Treatment in Traditional Agro-Food Processing Villages, Nhue-Day River Basin, Vietnam: Case Study in Hanoi City
- Journal: Journal of Environmental Protection
- Author from VNUA:1. Trần Thị Thu Trang 2. Nguyễn Văn Song
- Authors: Tran Thi Thu Trang, Roberto F. Rañola, Nguyen Van Song
- Abstract:
Despite the number of studies focusing on the financial analysis of production activities, conducting on technical solutions, and improving water quality, no study has been conducted on the application of economic instruments that apply to water quality management in craft villages, and several studies
of WTP also. This study aimed to estimate the households’ willingness-to-pay for wastewater treatment in selected traditional agro-food processing villages in Nhue-Day River Basin, Vietnam. A pilot Choice Experiment (CE) technique in Choice Modelling (CM) approach was applied for this study with
267 selected agro-food processing households by using the conditional logit (CL) and random parameter logit (RPL) models. The results showed that totalannual environmental fee for wastewater treatment from agro-food processing households is estimated as 1089 million VND (equal to US$47,868
per year) for the total of 902 agro-food processing households in three research sites in Nhue-Day River Basin. This estimated budget for wastewater
treatment accounted for 55.85% of total annual operation and maintenance costs only. In addition, the technology is improved to enable 90% of treated
wastewater. Overall, the results of this study suggest the new wastewater treatment plant construction and improved wastewater collection system by
increasing the investment in order to improve the water quality in Nhue-Day River Basin that brings about the reducing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and human health risks.

- Title: HOW DOES THE INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY PRICE CHANGE BEHAVIOR OF HOUSEHOLDS IN CRAFT PRODUCTION? A CASE STUDY IN CRAFT VILLAGES, BAC NINH PROVINCE VIETNAM
- Journal: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCIAL ISSUES
- Author from VNUA:1. Nguyễn Thị Hải Ninh 2. Nguyễn Mậu Dũng
- Authors: Nguyen Thi Hai Ninh, Philippe Lebailly, Nguyen Mau Dung
- Abstract:
The findings of the research on 120 production households in craft villages show that steel producers are more affected by electricity price increase rather than woodcarving one. This is because steel households use more high power machines which make electricity cost is approximate 25 times higher than that cost of woodcarving housholds and is accounted for 5% of total production cost. When electricity price increasing, craft households choose three main solutions to adapt including: invest in new machines using less electricity power; change to produce in mid-night when electricity price is low; and move to make products which spend less electricity power. Base on ARIMA (3,1,1) and ARIMA (1,1,4) models, the forecast for electricity demand of craft households in short term identify that if electricity price increases 7.5%, profit of steel households will decrease over 3 millions dong per month whereas profit of wood households is not significantly dropped.

- Title: Natural resource extraction and household welfare in rural Laos
- Journal: Land Degradation & Development
- Author from VNUA:Đỗ Trường Lâm
- Authors: Trung Thanh Nguyen, Truong Lam Do, Ulrike Grote
- Abstract:
Degradation of natural resources is a threat to sustainable development in many developing countries. Solving this requires an understanding of the factors affecting the extraction of and the dependence on the resources as well as the impacts on rural welfare. In this study, we identify the factors affecting the extraction of and the dependence on forest and water resources and examine the impacts of the extraction on rural household welfare in Laos. We address our research questions with an econometric framework that models the extraction and its implications simultaneously. We use the data of 430 rural households from a survey undertaken in 2013 in 38 villages of Savannakhet Province. Our findings show that extracting forest and water resources is a shock‐coping strategy of rural households but contributes to reducing household income inequality. For extracting households, the extraction increases household income, consumption, and food security. However, for non-extracting households, although participating in the extraction would increase food security, it would reduce their income and consumption. We suggest that promoting rural education and off‐farm employment opportunities and enhancing investments in physical infrastructures would reduce the extraction of and the dependence on the resources of extractors and prevent non-extractors from being forced to extract the resources.

- Author from VNUA:Kim Văn Vạn
- Authors: Hien Van Doan, Seyed Hossein Hoseinifar, Chartchai Khanongnuch, Apinun Kanpiengjai, Kridsada Unban, Van Van Kim, Satawat Srichaiyo
- Abstract:
The investigation was conducted to evaluate the possible effects of singular or combined administration of hostassociated probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum N11 and Bacillus velezensis H3.1) on several innate-immune parameters, disease resistance, and growth performance of Nile tilapia, (O. niloticus). Tilapia fingerlings were assigned for te following diets: Diet 1 (0 - control), Diet 2 (107CFUg−1B. velezensis H3.1), Diet 3 (108CFUg−1L. plantarum N11), and Diet 4 (107CFUg−1B. velezensis H3.1+108CFUg−1L. plantarum N11). At days 15 and 30 post feeding, skin mucus and innate immune parameters as well as growth performance were collected. The challengetest was conducted at the end of feeding trial (i.e 30 days post feeding). For serum immunity, serum lysozyme activity of fish fed probiotics diets was significantly higher than the control group, except for fish fed B. velezensis H3.1, where no significant was observed when compared with the control (P>0.05). Likewise, serum peroxidase, alternative complement, phagocytosis, and respiratory burst activities were significantly higher in treated groups compared to the control (P<0.05). Also, the relative percent of survival (RPS) in L. plantarum N11 and B. velezensis H3.1, L.plantarumN11, and B.velezensis H3.1 treatmentswere 58.33%, 54.17%, 41.67%, respectively.

- Title: Recognition of coronary atherosclerotic plaque tissue on intravascular ultrasound images by using misclassification sensitive training of dis-criminative restricted boltzmann machine
- Journal: Journal of Biomimetics, Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Trọng Kương
- Authors: Nguyen Trong Kuong, Eiji Uchino, Noriaki Suetake
- Abstract:
Coronary atherosclerotic plaque has been extensively studied in pathological research. Improving the evaluation of vulnerable rupture is important to prevent acute heart failure. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) method is one of techniques to acquire information about atherosclerotic plaque, which is backscattered ultrasound signal sensed by IVUS transducer. The vessel structure and tissue components are then characterized in relation to the acquired signals. In this study, eight human coronary vessel sections are involved, and we use discriminative restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) to classify coronary tissues as a target classifier. The quantization domain of IVUS signals are used to extract binary features for adapting Gaussian model of RBM. In addition, we propose a misclassification sensitive training of disRBM to deal with the class imbalances. The results are compared to the conventional integrated backscattered IVUS method (IB-IVUS) and the cost sensitive neural network for the same tasks.

- Title: Black Band disease-related (BBD) cyanobacterium from Okinawan corals
- Journal: Journal of Applied Phycology
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Xuân Hòa
- Authors: Philipus Uli Basa Hutabarat, Xuan Hoa Nguyen, Shoichiro Suda
- Abstract:
The number of reports of coral disease is increasing worldwide. Among coral diseases, BBD was discovered first, along Caribbean coastlines in 1973. The main symptom of BBD is a black mat on the surface of the infected coral tissue. This black mat is a microbial consortium in which a dominant filamentous cyanobacterium proliferates. In Okinawa various reports and
ecological studies of BBD have been conducted, but the species of cyanobacteria associated with Okinawan BBD remain unclear. This study focused primarily on the classification of BBD cyanobacteria in Okinawa Prefecture (Sesoko-jima and Miyako-jima Islands). BBD was sampled in a colony of Montipora sp. from Sesoko-jima Island on June 15, 2015, July and August 2016, and May 2017. Two BBD tissues were sampled from colonies of Goniopora sp. at two localities of Miyako-jima Island on August 27 and 28, 2015. All samples were non-branching filamentous, with a dark brown crude culture color and round cells with a tapered tip; the Miyako-jima samples were 2.6–3.8 μm long and 3.3–4.5 μm wide, while the Sesoko-jima samples were 2.6–4.6 μm long and 3.1–4.8 μm wide. We attempted to isolate these cyanobacteria but had difficulty establishing well-growing cultures. Instead of culturing, single-filament PCR was employed to obtain partial 16S rRNA gene sequences using cyanobacteria-specific primers. Although slight morphological differences were found among samples, the 1219-bp partial 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained were identical. These sequences matched those of Roseofilum reptotaenium FJ210722. Our data suggest that the dominant cyanobacteria in different localities and different coral colonies belong to the same species, R. reptotaenium.

- Title: The Red River Delta, Vietnam: How does industrialization change the use of labor in agricultural production at farm households?
- Journal: The Asian International Journal of Life Sciences
- Author from VNUA:1. Nguyễn Mậu Dũng 2. Nguyễn Thị Hải Ninh
- Authors: NGUYEN THI HAI NINH, PHILIPPE LEBAILLY and NGUYEN MAU DUNG
- Abstract:
In this paper, we analyzed the change in labor use for agricultural production at farm households in the Red River Delta, Vietnam under the context of industrialization. By using primary data collected from 130 farm households and 60 exchanged/hired laborers in Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Thai Binh provinces, we find that family farm laborers popularly have age range from 45 to 54 years old and female laborers in agricultural production are accounted for higher proportion than male laborers. This is because of the fact that industrialization process makes men take advantage in terms of health and skill to seek for off-farm jobs. Also, industrialization in the Red River Delta creates the wave of migration to urban/abroad regions both for male and female labor. Consequently, the shortage of labor supply in farm households is substituted by exchanging and renting laborers, especially in peaking seasons. Based on the sample of 130 farm households, we estimate a multinomial logistic model to quantify the impact of industrialization represented by farmland area, number of migrant laborers, number of family laborers and household income on household’s choice in labor use for agriculture. With one more migrant laborer, a household tends to exchange labor with 2.3 times higher than using family labor only, and it likely hire labor with 2.9 times higher than using family labor only. Therefore, creating off-farm jobs in rural areas is an appropriate policy to absorb laborers and to prevent them from migrating far away their home

- Title: Multifunctionality of Peri-Urban Agriculture: A Case Study in Trau Quy Commune, Hanoi City
- Journal: International journal of Rural Development, Environment and Health Research(IJREH)
- Author from VNUA:1. Nguyễn Phượng Lê 2. Nguyễn Mậu Dũng
- Authors: Nguyen Phuong Le and Nguyen Mau Dung
- Abstract:
The emergence of the concept of multifunctionality responds to a wide range of concerns about significant, worldwide changes in agriculture, particularly in peri-urban areas. Multifunctionality at farm level means that farms not only provide agricultural goods and food, but also services to the community as well as public goods. For two recent decades, rapid urbanization in periurban area of Vietnam has strongly impacted on livelihood of people whose livelihood used to be farm-based. The periurban residents have been facing with food insecurity and underemployment, particularly those who could not seek new jobs and constructed new livelihood strategies. Based on data collected from a survey of 60 peri-urban households who continue farming together with other off-farm economic activities in Trau Quy commune, this paper showed that farmers’ maintenance of farming at different scales make agriculture play multifunctional roles such as income diversification, job creation, land conservation, food security, food safety, social network maintenance, greening and scenic services. In order to enhance the multi-functions of agriculture in peri-urban areas, governmental policy need to create the proper framework conditions for optimal development.

- Title: Does sea-dyke construction affect the spatial distribution of pesticides in agricultural soils?: A case study from the Red River Delta, Vietnam
- Journal: Environmental Pollution
- Author from VNUA:Ngô Thế Ân
- Authors: Braun, G., Sebesvari, Z., Braun, M., Kruse, J., Amelung, W., An, N. T. Renaud, F. G
- Abstract:
Abstract
The Red River Delta is a major agricultural production area of Vietnam with year-round use of pesticides for paddy rice cultivation and other production systems. The delta is protected from flooding, storm surges and saline water intrusion by a sophisticated river and sea-dyke system. Little is known about the effects of such a dyke system on pesticide pollution in the enclosed landscape. Our aim was to address this gap by i) determining pesticide prevalence in soils and sediments within a dyked agricultural area, and by ii) assessing whether and to which degree this dyke system might affect the spatial distribution of pesticides. After sampling paddy rice fields (topsoil) and irrigation ditches (sediment) perpendicular to the dyke in Giao Thuy district, we analysed 12 of the most commonly used pesticides in this area. In soils, we detected most frequently isoprothiolane (100% detection frequency), chlorpyrifos (85%) and propiconazole (41%) while in sediments isoprothiolane (71%) and propiconazole (71%) were most frequently found. Maximum concentrations reached 42.6 μg isoprotiolane kg-1 in soil, and 35.1 μg azoxystrobin kg-1 in sediment. Our results supported the assumption that the dyke system influenced residue distribution of selected pesticides. More polar substances increasingly accumulated in fields closer to the sea-dyke (R2 = 0.92 for chlorpyrifos and 0.51 for isoprothiolane). We can thus support initiatives from local authorities to use the distance to dykes as a mean for deliniating zones of different environmental pollution; yet, the degree at which dykes influence pesticide accumulation appear to be compound specific.

- Authors: Kim Văn Vạn Đoàn Thị Nhinh
- Abstract:
Abstract. Wild-caught ornamental marine fish from NhaTrang (Khanh Hoa) and Ha Long (Quang Ninh) in Vietnam were examined over the three sampling batches corresponding to the spring, summer and autumn times for the prevalence of Cryptocaryon irritans. Out of a total of 211 fish (15 species), 143 (67.7 %) were found to be infected with the mean intensity of 7.67 parasites per field of view (x4 magnification). The prevalence of C.irritans in fish caught during the spring (91.0 3% on average) was significantly higher than that of the fish caught during the summer (39.29 %). A wide variation in the prevalence of the parasite was shown among the fish species. The highest prevalence and intensity of the infection occurred in Plataxteira, Diodon holocanthus, Paracanthurus hepatusat 100 % of infection and density of 12 parasites/field of view (x4 magnification) while and the lowest prevalence of C. irritans appeared on Rhinecanthus aculeatus, Zancluscornutus, and Zebrasoma veliferum with less than 50% of fish infected. Clinical signs of fish infected of C.irritans showed such as tiny white spots on skin, gills, and fins; ragged fins, changes in skin colour, cloudy eyes and increase mucus production.

- Abstract:
Land use/land cover (LULC) and climate changes are two main factors directly affecting regional hydrologic conditions and results in a variety of impacts on soil erosion and degradation, water quantity and quality throughout the world. However, very few studies in Vietnam have investigated changes in hydrological process under the impact of climate
and land use changes on a basin scale. Moreover, the local impacts of climate change and human activities on hydrology differ from place to place and need to be investigated on a regional scale. The objective of this study is to assess the individual and combined impacts of land use and climate changes on flow transport for the Nam Rom river basin, Northwestern Viet Nam using Remote Sensing (RS) and Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) model. Maps with land-use were made using RS for the years 1992 and 2015. SWAT model was used for hydrological process simulation. Results indicated that SWAT proved to be a powerful tool in simulating the impacts of land use and climate change on catchment hydrology. The change in better land use in the study area between from 1992 and 2015 strongly contributed to increasing hydrological processes (ET, percolation, ground water, and water yield) while decreased surface flow. Data on climate change in the period 1992-2015 led to significant decrease of all hydrological components. The combination of land use and climate changes impacts caused decrease significantly surface runoff (- 16.9%), ground water (-5.7%), water yield (-9.2%), and sediment load (-4.9%). Overall, the changes in climate affected hydrological components more significantly and strongly than the changes in land use in the Nam Rom river basin during the 1992–2015. Under impacts of projected land use and climate change scenarios (2015-2030) on hydrological process of the upper Nam Rom river basin indicate that ET and surface flow are more sensitive to the changes in land use and climate in the future. In conclusion, this study played an important role in developing SWAT application of the Vietnam where the most disaster-prone regions suffering from typhoons, drought, landslide, soil erosion, and forest degradation. The results from this study provided the experience and techniques to be possibly applied to other river basins in Vietnam and could be value of to planners/decision-makers for implementation of appropriate integrated river
basin management as well as the development of mitigation and adaption strategies in relation to land use and climate changes.

- Title: A research on the Kinematics and the Performances of the effect of the geometrical shape of inlet nozzles of Gas–Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone (GLCC) Separators
- Journal: Technical University of Sofia
- Author from VNUA:Hoàng Đức Liên
- Authors: Ho Minh Kha, Nguyen Thanh Nam, Hoang Duc Lien, Vo Tuyen, Svetlin Antonov, Ivan Antonov
- Abstract:
In the petroleum industry, the Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone Separator (GLCC) is a simple, easily manufactured and low-cost equipment that is being interested in petroleum companies in the current time because of the pressure of the decline in the price of oil in the world. However, the behavior of phases in the instrument occurs is the rapid, complex and unsteady way which may cause the difficulty of enhancing the performance of the separation of phases. Almost all recent multiple research shows that the inlet nozzle geometry is probably the most important factor that impacts directly to the performance of the separation of phases of flows inside the instrument. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of the flow by the application of single and double inlet nozzles in different gauge caliber nozzle in proportion to the different flow rates sizes by using 3D CFD simulation. The derived components of tangential and axial velocities of flow from the simulated model are reciprocally compared. The results show that the double symmetrical inlet nozzle type could gain better performance of separation of phases than the single one.

- Title: Coronary plaque classification with accumulative training of deep Boltzmann machines
- Journal: ICIC Express Letters
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Trọng Kương
- Authors: Nguyen Trong Kuong, Eiji Uchino, Noriaki Suetake
- Abstract:
Using powerful classification frameworks to handle with large data sets has attracted much attention in medical applications. This study shows an application of deep Boltzmann machines (DBM's) to characterize intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) signals of coronary plaque. Our problem is to recognize coronary plaque tissues from IVUS signals. In the IVUS data sets, the data normalization is affected by near field artifacts, thus it gives rise to difficulties of the classification by DBM's. Additionally, there are significant imbalances between tissue classes. In solution, we introduce an accumulative selection of training sets which is sensitive to misclassification rates to deal with class imbalances while the IVUS dataset is concerned at binary level. The results show that the proposed method performs better than integrated backscatter IVUS method (IB-IVUS) for the same task.

- Abstract:
Ascarid Larva Migrans Syndrome (ascarid LMS) is a clinical syndrome in humans, caused by the migration of animal roundworm larvae such as Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Ascaris suum. Humans may acquire infection by ingesting embryonated eggs, or infective larvae of these parasites in contaminated meat and organ meats. To detect these pathogenic contaminations, a novel nested multiplex PCR system was developed. Our novel nested
multiplex PCR assay showed specific amplification of T. canis, T. cati and Ascaris spp. Detection limit of the nested multiplex PCR was tested with serial dilution of T. canis, T. cati or A. suum genomic DNA (gDNA) from 100 pg to 100 ag and found to be 10 fg, 1 fg and 100 fg, respectively. When larvae were spiked into chicken liver tissue, DNA of T. canis and A. suum was detected from the liver spiked with a single larva, while the assay required at least 2 larvae of T. cati. Moreover, the ascarid DNA was detected from the liver of mice infected with 100 and 300 eggs of T. canis, T. cati or A. suum. This nested multiplex PCR assay could be useful for the detection of contamination with ascarid larvae in meat and organ meats.

- Abstract:
Small farmers sell their products at the farm gate to intermediaries, often at a low price.
However, innovations in marketing arrangements can transform market relations in favour of
smallholders, and producer organizations are well-positioned to take advantage of these new
approaches. Factor analysis was applied on twelve components of output markets in Haiduong
province. The results show that there are patterns that are observable in terms of access and use of output market by fish farmers. The most commonly used output markets by aquaculture
farmers are wholesale fresh fish market, local fresh output market, and the best retail produce
markets. The study reveals that the factor of distance to the wholesale fresh fish markets is
decisive component to the market access for the fish producers. In addition, the best retail output markets also provide an important market outlet for produce by aquaculture farmers. Moreover, improving transportation system in the projected regions of aquaculture production as well as rural areas will not only improve accessibility of external markets, but will also improve accessibility of local output markets.

From the production side, it is developing of indigenous pig with in both small and large scale farm in mountainous and delta areas. The Ban pig market still depends much on the assemblers who are the main collectors and play an important role in delivering pigs from the producers to the restaurants of output market by fish farmers. The most commonly used output markets by aquaculture farmers are wholesale fresh fish market, local fresh output market, and the best retail produce markets. The study reveals that the factor of distance to the wholesale fresh fish markets is decisive component to the market access for the fish producers. In addition, the best retail output markets also provide an important market outlet for produce by aquaculture farmers. Moreover, improving transportation system in the projected regions of aquaculture production as well as rural areas will not only improve accessibility of external markets, but will also improve accessibility of local output markets.

- Abstract:
Fermentation has been used for centuries to produce food in South-East Asia and some foods of this region are famous in the whole World. However, in the twenty first century, issues like food safety and quality must be addressed in a World changing from local business to globalization. In Western countries, the answer to these questions has been made through hygienisation, generalization of the use of starters, specialization of agriculture and use of long-distance transportation. This may have resulted in a loss in the taste and typicity of the products, in an extensive use of antibiotics and other chemicals and eventually, in a loss in the confidence of consumers to the products. The challenges awaiting fermentation in South-East Asia are thus to improve safety and quality in a sustainable system producing tasty and typical fermented products and valorising by-products. At the end of the “AsiFood Erasmus+ project”, the goal of this paper is to present and discuss these challenges as addressedby the Tropical Fermentation Network, a group of researchers from universities, research centers and companies in Asia and Europe. This paper presents current actions and prospects on hygienic, environmental, sensorial and nutritional qualities of traditional fermented food including screening of functional bacteria and starters, food safety strategies, research for new antimicrobial compounds, development of more sustainable fermentations and valorisation of by-products. A specificity of this network is also the multidisciplinary approach dealing with microbiology, food, chemical, sensorial, and genetic analyses, biotechnology, food supply chain, consumers and ethnology.

- Title: Apis cerana Beekeeping and Sacbrood Disease Management in Vietnam: Review
- Journal: Journal of Apiculture
- Author from VNUA:Phạm Hồng Thái
- Authors: Pham Hong Thai, Nguyen Thi Huyen, Tran Van Toan and Chuleui Jung
- Abstract:
Beekeeping status of Apis cerana with emphasis of experiences overcoming sacbrood virus disease are presented. Social bee fauna are rich in Vietnam with 6 honeybee species (Apis laboriosa, Apis dorsata, Apis mellifera, Apis cerana, Apis andrenifomis, Apis florea); 8 stingless bee species (Trigona laeviceps, Trigona ventralis, Trigona pagdeni, Trigona gressitti, Trigona fuscobalteata, Trigona capenteri, Trigona scintillans Trigona iridipenis) and 2 bumble bee species (Bumbus haemorrhoidalis, B. breviceps). All of them are native except A. mellifera which was introduced in1887. These bees are slated for conservation by the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development. Honey and other bee products are mainly harvested from 3 species including A. cerana, A. mellifera and A. dorsata. The manageable species (A. cerana and A. mellifera) are increasing in number, reaching about 1,500,000 beehives. Vietnam is the second largest honey exporter in Asia, with a total of about 48,000 tons of
honey exported to the international market in 2014. A. cerana plays an important role in poverty alleviation in mountainous and remote areas of Vietnam. Honeybee suffers from various diseases of Sacbrood virus disease (SBV), European foulbrood (EFB), Nosema, and parasitic mites of Tropilaelaps mercedes and Varroa destructor. Most of these diseases can be resolved with biocontrol methods. For the parasitic mites, Vietnamese beekeepers usually apply formic acid.

- Title: Optimizing the alginate coating layer of doxorubicinloaded iron oxide nanoparticles for cancer hyperthermia and chemotherapy
- Journal: Journal of Materials Science
- Author from VNUA:Lê Thị Thu Hương (MT)
- Authors: Thi Thu Huong Le, Thuc Quang Bui, Thi Minh Thi Ha, Mai Huong Le, Hong Nam Pham and Phuong Thu Ha
- Abstract:
Chemotherapy in cancer treatment usually leads to serious side effects on patients due to the unselectiveness and high toxicity on normal cells of cancer drugs. Loading cancer drugs into nano-platforms could be an alternative approach to effectively deliver drugs to tumors and reduce toxic exposure on healthy cells. In this work, we synthesized drug delivery nano-systems based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles (obtained from co-precipitation reaction) which could
provide targeting of drugs to the tumor sites by an external magnetic field. Also, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) could generate heat to kill cancer cells at a certain temperature range. The systems were designed for loading anticancer agent doxorubicin by using alginate-coated iron oxide MNPs. It was found that the loading was achieved by complex formation of doxorubicin and the alginate layer. Various concentrations of alginate solutions produced different sizes as well as drug loading capacities of the nanoparticles. The highest loading content of 18.96% achieved at the alginate concentration of 4 mg ml-1, corresponding to
the mass ratio of alginate to Fe3O4 of around 1:2. The magnetic properties, especially the inductive heating effect of the nanoparticles, along with the impact of the systems on tumor cells were investigated. The results proved that the nanoparticles can serve as a good drug delivery system, in terms of both effective hyperthermia and chemotherapy.

- Authors: Thi Ngan Mai, Van Diep Nguyen, Wataru Yamazaki, Tamaki Okabayashi, Shuya Mitoma, Kosuke Notsu, Yuta Sakai, Ryoji Yamaguchi, Junzo Norimine and Satoshi Sekiguchi
- Abstract:
Background
Porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) is an emerging disease in pigs that causes massive economic losses in the swine industry, with high mortality in suckling piglets. Early identification of PED virus (PEDV)-infected herd through surveillance or monitoring strategies is necessary for mass control of PED. However, a common working diagnosis system involves identifying PEDV-infected animals individually, which is a costly and time-consuming approach. Given the above information, the thrusts of this study were to develop a real-time fluorescent reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RtF-RT-LAMP) assay and establish a pooled testing system using faecal sample to identify PEDV-infected herd.
Results
In this study, we developed an accurate, rapid, cost-effective, and simple RtF- RT-LAMP assay for detecting the PEDV genome targeting M gene. The pooled testing system using the RtF-RT-LAMP assay was optimized such that a pool of at least 15 individual faecal samples could be analysed.
Conclusions
The developed RtF-RT-LAMP assay in our study could support the design and implementation of large-scaled epidemiological surveys as well as active surveillance and monitoring programs for effective control of PED.

- Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to detect porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV)
subclinically infected pigs shipped from non-case farms to slaughterhouses. Systematic sampling was conducted at two slaughterhouses. A total of 1,556 blood samples were collected from 80 case and non-case farms from pigs over 6 months old. Blood samples were centrifuged to obtain sera. Serial serum dilutions were subjected to serological examination for PEDV presence using Neutralization test (NT). The cut-off titer was set at titer of 1:2 dilution and farms with at least one positive sample in duplicate were classified as PED-positive farms. Several non-case farms (9.4%, 6/64) and 100% (16/16) of the case farms were indeed positive for PEDV. The proportion of seropositive animals from case farms was 63.7%, significantly different from that of non-case farms (4.3%, P<0.05). In both case and non-case farms, the proportion of seropositive animals in farrow-to-finish farms was significantly higher than in wean-to-finish farms (P<0.05). Seropositive animals in non-case farms were detected by NT in a sero-survey by sampling at slaughterhouses. Therefore, subclinically infected pigs should be considered prior to shipment.

- Authors: Viet Linh Nguyen, Vito Colella, Roberta Iatta1, Khanh Linh Bui, Filipe Dantas-Torres, Domenico Otranto
- Abstract:
The medical and veterinary significance of ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in tropical and subtropical zones is well recognized. Although ticks and TBPs are known to occur in Southeast Asia, limited data is available in the international literature for some countries, such as Vietnam. The aim of this study was to investigate the species of ticks and TBPs associated with dogs in northern Vietnam. Out of 359 dogs enrolled in this study, 26.2% (n = 94) were infested by 466 ticks (i.e., 287 males, 139 females, 30 nymphs, and 10 larvae). All ticks were morphologically identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, and some of them genetically characterized as belonging to the tropical lineage. A total of 302 ticks were molecularly screened for the detection of selected TBPs. Three ticks were positive for Hepatozoon canis, one for Ehrlichia canis, and one for Babesia vogeli, representing the first molecular characterization of these pathogens in Vietnam. In conclusion, the tropical lineage of R. sanguineus s.l. is the dominant tick taxon infesting dogs from northern Vietnam, where different TBPs are circulating

- Title: Forest governance and economic values of forest ecosystem services in Vietnam
- Journal: Land Use Policy
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Minh Đức
- Authors: Nguyen Minh DUC, Tihomir ANCEV, Alan RANDALL
- Abstract:
Forest ecosystems deliver valuable services to humanity. However, many forests are being degraded and their services have been undervalued. The main problem lies in the inadequate institutional arrangements for forest governance. This paper aims to assess the effects of alternative forest governance arrangements on the provision and economic values of forest ecosystem services (FES) in Vietnam. The study presents a framework for mapping land use and land cover (LULC) change stemming from actual and hypothetical changes in forest governance regimes, quantifies the resulting changes in the provision of FES, and estimates the associated economic values. In the context of the study site in the North Western uplands of Vietnam, we test three alternative forest governance scenarios: business as usual, with a dominant government role; a community-based governance regime; and a private, individual-based forestry governance regime. Scenarios are based quite closely on the way these regimes are (or might be expected to be) implemented in Vietnam. For each forest governance scenario, we map LULC changes based on land suitability analysis and transition likelihood for the period 2010 − 2020. The resulting maps are used as inputs into the InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs) model, which is used to estimate the quantity of three specific FES: carbon storage/sequestration, sediment yield, and water yield. We apply economic valuation methods to value these services: the social cost of carbon is used to estimate the economic values of carbon storage/sequestration; the cost of removing sediment deposited in reservoirs is applied for valuing the reduction of sediment yield, and the residual value of water supply for hydropower generation is used for valuing water yield. The results show that forest governance regimes have a significant effect not only on forest LULC, but also on the quantity and values of FES derived from forests. The FES are differentially affected by alternative forest governance regimes: some FES increase in quantity and value under some governance regimes and decrease under others. Of the three forest governance regimes examined, there is no one regime that will always be ‘better’ than the others in terms of provisioning all considered FES. For the specific context of Vietnam, we find that the private forest governance scenario is inferior to the community-based governance scenario, as an alternative to the current state-based governance. Because our results pertain to the scenarios as constructed, rather than generally to broad categories of governance regimes, there remains the possibility that regimes can be constructed that outperform all of those examined here.

- Abstract:
The traditional methods for measuring water quality variables are time-consuming and do not give a synoptic view of a water body or, more significantly, a synoptic view of different water bodies across the landscape. However, remote sensing technology with advantages such as wide area coverage and short revisit interval have been effectively used for environmental pollution applications, such as for monitoring water quality parameters. Many studies around the world show that optical satellite imagery can be used effectively in evaluating suspended sediment concentration. This article presents results of monitoring suspended sediment concentration in Red River, Hanoi, Vietnam through ground truth measurements and VNREDSat-1A multispectral data. The results obtained in the study can be used to serve the management, monitoring and evaluation of surface water quality.

- Title: A New Solution Method for Solving Transit Assignment Problems

- Authors: Le Luong Vuong, Tran Duc Quynh, Nguyen Quang Thuan
- Abstract:
. Congested transit assignment problems are crucial sub problems in planning public transportation systems. These problems are usually formulated in the form of non-convex optimization programs. In this work, we investigate the model given by De Cea et al. [3] that has been widely used by both practitioners and researchers. For solving this model, to the best of our knowledge, one must use a diagonalization technique in order to yield a symmetric assignment problem before applying a solution method. Consequently, the quality of the obtained solution would be possibly affected. The motivation of our work is to find a new efficient solution method to tackle directly the original assignment problem without diagonalization techniques. Basing on DC programming, we introduce a new solution method. The proposed algorithm is tested on the data given in [3]. Comparing with the existing method, the experimental results show that our approach is promising

- Journal: International Journal of Computational Vision and Robotics

- Abstract:
Estimating parameters of a primitive shape from a 3-D point cloud data is a challenging problem due to data containing noises and computational time demand. In this paper, we present a new robust estimator (named GCSAC, Geometrical Constraint SAmple Consensus) aimed at solving such issues. The proposed algorithm takes into account geometrical constraints to construct qualified samples for theestimation. Instead of randomly drawing minimal subset of sample, explicit geometrical properties of the interested primitive shapes (e.g., cylinder, sphereandcone )are used to drive sampling procedures.Ateachiteration ofGCSAC,the minimal subset sample is selected based on two criteria (1) It must ensure aconsistency with the estimated model via aroughly in lier ratio evaluation; (2) The samples satisfy geometrical constraints of the interested objects. Based on the obtained good samples, model estimation and verification procedures of the robust estimator are deployed in GCSAC. Extensive experiments have been conducted on synthesized and real datasets for evaluation. Comparing with the common robust estimators of RANSAC family (RANSAC,PROSAC,MLESAC, MSAC, LO-RANSAC and NAPSAC), GCSAC out performs in term of both the precision of the estimated model and computational time. The implementations of the proposed method and the datasets are made publicly available.

- Authors: Trần Hữu Quốc, Dương Thành Huân và Trần Minh Tú
- Abstract:

- Title: Can PES and REDD+ match Willingness To Accept payments in contracts for reforestation and avoided forest degradation? The case of farmers in upland Bac Kan, Vietnam
- Journal: Land Use Policy

- Abstract:
REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) social safeguards promote improvement of local communities’ livelihoods. However, discussion on benefit sharing in REDD+has largely focused on coefficients for differentiated distribution of available funds. The question of economic incentives required to voluntarily establish and maintain tree cover has received limited attention. Using contingent evaluation, we elicited Willingness-To-Accept compensation for entering into contracts requiring farmers to 1) establish plantations, 2) abstain from logging mature plantations and 3) refrain from cutting indigenous hardwood trees in Ba Be and Na Ri districts in Bac Kan province, Vietnam. We found average WTA payments in the range of 231–402 USD ha−1, 256–414 USD ha−1 year−1 and 387–594 USD ha−1year−1 in these three scenarios, with WTA payments significantly higher in Ba Be district, characterized as poorer than Na Ri. Published estimates suggest payments of 38–43 USD ha−1 year−1 from PFES (Payment for Forest Ecosystem Services), REDD+ and government support combined and a one-off payment of 300 USD ha−1 from government reforestation schemes. Hence, the inability to match WTA levels suggests a bleak outlook for PFES or REDD+ projects aiming to comply with social safeguard measures to protect rural household welfare. However, we note that everyone in the sample was willing to engage in these contracts given compensation.

- Abstract:
Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) infections have occurred continuously and crossed the species barrier to humans, leading to fatali-ties. A polymerase chain reaction based molecular test is currently the most sensitive diagnostic tool for HPAIV; however, the results must be analyzed in centralized diagnosis systems by a trained individual. This requirement leads to delays in quarantine and isolation. To control the spread of HPAIV, rapid and accurate diagnostics suitable for field testing are needed, and the tests must facilitate a differential diagnosis between HPAIV and low patho¬genic avian influenza virus (LPAIV), which undergo cleavage specifically by trypsin- or furin-like proteases, respectively. In this study, a differential avian influenza virus rapid test kit is developed and evaluated in vitro and using clinical specimens from HPAIV H5NT-infected animals. It is demonstrated that this rapid test kit provides highly sensitive and specific detection of HPAIV and LPAIV and is thus a useful field diagnostic tool for H5N1 HPAIV outbreaks and for rapid quarantine control of the disease.

- Abstract:
The research investigates the impacts of female migrants on household’s farming and its implications on rural household autonomy under the context of economic reform in Vietnam. The different forms of internal and external household arrangements related to the production and distribution processes of turning land to livelihood are designed to understand the land tenure change under the context of migration. This research focuses on the migration patterns, the volume and usages of remittance to understand the ways in which the different households allocate their resources on farm and non-farm sectors. The findings suggest that female migrants have a greater contribution in agriculture production both in remittance investment and time spending on agricultural maintenance while male migrants increase household earnings by accumulating capital from non-farm business. Migration, therefore, rather than creating agricultural regression, amplifies the autonomy of peasant families and their units of production as they respond to the modernization process

- Abstract:
Freshwater aquaculture production systems are closely related to Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture systems. The systems are traditionally integrated with crop production, horticulture, and livestock husbandry. It will shed light on how the aquaculture system plays various roles in supporting agrarian livelihoods, their relationships to well-being, and food security using a clear example of small-scale aquaculture in a province of the Red River Delta. The challenges and opportunities presented to small-scale producers and culture systems are assessed, and the likely future of small-scale freshwater production systems is discussed and forecast Combining historical, adaptive, and systematic approaches, the study revealed the features and characteristics of inland aquaculture systems at the household level over a decade of the evolutionary process (1997–2015). By investigating 151 aquaculture households in two representative districts of the region, the three existing systems are identified: VAC system (23%) (whereby V=vuon-gardens (horticulture), A=Ao-ponds (aquaculture) and C=Chuong-animal sheds/pens (livestock husbandry)); aquaculture/livestock (AF) system (43%); and the commercially intensive fish culture (FS) system (34%). Beyond the positive benefits to the food system and rural development, potential considerably exists for further aquaculture integration within VAC systems in the region, which will contribute to poverty reduction and improvement of the livelihoods of small-scale rural farmers.

- Abstract:
Freshwater aquaculture production systems are closely related to Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture systems (IAA). Four systems were identified from freshwater aquaculture farming in the Red River Delta of Vietnam. There was prevalently VAC system existence both inside and outside the residential area. The system was defined as farming diversifications and nutrient linkages among V (orchard), A (pond) and C (animal) components relying on the on-farm resources and off-farm integrations and linkages with other human activities. The development of the freshwater aquaculture systems was very diverse and dynamic. The paper presented the economic efficiency and effectiveness on four freshwater fish production systems. Clear evidence was found to provide evidence that the traditional VAC system was sustainable food supply model for the developing countries. Farms operated the VAC systems could easily diversify their farming activities, foods,
foodstuffs, redundant employment, and income. Especially, income diversification was a practical strategy for rural farms to reduce the vulnerability on their agricultural practices both on production and market risks. The advantages were likely to ensure that VAC systems would still be more and more important role in northern Vietnam for food security and rural development under the context of agricultural land loss by transforming progressively into urbanisation and industrialisation.

It is no doubt that industrial zones leverage economic development in many countries. However, migrant workers who are main labor forces in industrial zones faced to some vulnerable situations easily related to both working and non-working environment. Base on the survey of 190 migrant workers in two industrial zones in Bac Ninh, this study found that labor sustainability is threaten by going on the foot loose of traditional development of industrial zones. Migrant workers in these zones faced a trade-off between accepting a hard life and accumulating capitals as well as experiences for an expected better one afterward. They are going to be circular and leave these zones after staying several years on their works.

- Title: Gender action plans in the aquaculture value chain: what’s missing?
- Journal: Reviews in Aquaculture
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Diễn
- Authors: Roel H. Bosma , Thi Dien Nguyen, Lorna M. Calumpang, Sef Alba Carandang
- Abstract:
Gender equality has been a political issue in view of human rights and welfare since several decades. Therefore, many countries have developed Gender Action Plans (GAPs) that support equal access of both sexes to education, employment and finance. Two workshops on GAPs in aquaculture and a literature review brought about the question: what’s missing in Asian sectoral GAPs. Not all reviewed Asian countries have GAPs for fishery/ aquaculture, but all encountered constraints to achieve their goals regarding equal access for women. Women’s
contribution in aquaculture tends to go beyond the traditional gender divide. For example, women may lead in the area of production because they can combine aquaculture with their homebound tasks and own vertically integrated companies. However, skewed perceptions on the role, status and perception of women and men, more so in strong than weak patriarchies (the former accept the subservient role, while the latter exercise the dominant role) limit women’s access to training opportunities on new aquaculture technologies. Women are also left out in policy- and decision-making processes; and in the value chain, women receive
lower wages than men. Their role is underestimated by lack of disaggregated data, as reflected in post-disaster interventions and industrial development programs. To be effective sectoral GAPs, based on disaggregated data, should have budgets, plans and target indicators for which leaders could be held accountable. These GAPs, however, can’t address the required radical change in attitude toward women; unless deliberately planned educational media campaigns are embedded into the national GAPs.

- Abstract:
Background: The international community strongly advocates the implementation of multi-sectoral surveillance policies for an effective approach to antibiotic resistance, in line with the One Health concept. To comply with these international recommendations, the Vietnamese government has issued an inter-ministerial surveillance strategy for antibiotic resistance, including an integrated surveillance system. However, one may question the ability and willingness of surveillance stakeholders to implement the collaborations required. To assess the feasibility ofoperationalising this strategy within the national context, we explored the role of key stakeholders in the strategy, as well as their abilities to comply with it.
Methods: We conducted a qualitative approach based on an iterative stakeholder mapping and analysis, in three distinct steps: (1) a description of the structure of the national surveillance strategy (literature review, key informant interviews); (2) an analysis of the key stakeholders’ positions regarding the strategy (semi-structured interviews); (3) the identification of factors influencing the operationalisation of the collaborative surveillance strategy (comparison
of data collected at the first and second steps).
Results: The mapping of the surveillance system, as well as the characterisation of key stakeholders according to organisational and functional attributes, underlined that inter-sectoral surveillance initiatives do exist, but that the organisation of the national surveillance system remains highly silo-oriented. Based on stakeholder perspectives, we identified seven factors that may influence the implementation of the One Health strategy at national level: governance and operational frameworks, divergence of institutional cultures, level of knowledge, technical capacities, allocation of resources, conflicting commercial interests and influence of international partners.
Conclusions: The study suggests that the operationalisation of the collaborative surveillance strategy requires the full adhesion of stakeholders and the provision of appropriate resources. Based on these findings, we have proposed a guidance framework together withecommendations to move towards a more suitable governance and operational model for One Health surveillance of antibiotic resistance in Vietnam. To lever and promote successful inter-sectoral collaboration, a participatory “learning by doing” process could be applied to guide, frame and mentor stakeholders through the identification of appropriate levels of ollaboration,
depending on the expected positive impacts on the value of surveillance.

- Title: An Analysis of the Linkages in the Fresh Milk Chain of Viet Nam
- Journal: Greener Journal of Business and Management Studies
- Author from VNUA: 1. Trần Hữu Cường 2. Bùi Thị Nga
- Authors: Trần Thị Mai Phương, Trần Hữu Cường, Bùi Thị Nga
- Abstract:
The dairy sector is a potential economic sector of Vietnam. However, it is facing some difficulties both in the milk’s quality and quantity. One of the reason is the loosened linkages among actors and stakeholders in the fresh milk chain. Due to the differences in geographical, climatic and socioeconmic conditions, the state of these linkages vary among regions. This study aims to analyze, evaluate and compare the linkages among actors and stakeholders in the fresh milk chain in some important milk producing regions of Vietnam. Two chosen sites are in favorable conditions for dairy farming are Son La Province and Lam Dong province; and two sites having less favorable conditions namely Ha Nam, Ho Chi Minh City are chosen. Data was collected from questionaire surveys distributed to 40 famers in each study site. The results have shown that the linkages in Son La Province seem to be the strongest because of the favorable climate conditions and longer experience in cattle raising of dairy farmers. Despite the favorability of climate condition, the linkages in Lam Dong are still loose. Linkages in Lam Dong are even looser than those in Ho Chi Minh city, which is an unfavorable area. Linkages in Ha Nam are likely to be the most loosened among four study sites. Linkages between dairy farmers and some types of stakeholders are quite tenuous. It is recommended for all actors and stakeholders to enhance the strengths of the fresh milk chain: Dairy farmers should be more actively join in the chain, dairy plants – the most powerful actors in the chain, should be more supportive in terms of providing loan, technique and traninng etc., and last but not least, it is the more intense of stakeholders’ involvement in the fresh milk chain.

- Title: Temperature Effects on the Development of Vietnamese Cotton Bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner)
- Journal: Kyushu University Institutional Repository
- Author from VNUA:Hồ Thị Thu Giang
- Authors: Hồ Thị Thu Giang, Hatsada VIRACHACK, Trịnh Hương Giang, và Takatoshi UENO
- Abstract:
Cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of cotton, green onion, groundnut, chickpea, tomato, sorghum, cowpea, etc., distributing widely in Asia, Europe and Africa. This pest often causes great economic damage due to its high reproductive potential and pesticide resist- ance. It is well established that temperature is one of the most important factors in determining the survival, development, and size of insects, but the effects can be modified depending on the geographic strains. Here, we investigated the effects of constant temperatures on the survival, development and individual size of Vietnamese H. armigera when reared on bean sprouts in the laboratory. The results showed that the survivals from larval hatching to adult emergence from the pupa were lower under lower temperatures. The duration of the developmental stages decreased as temperature increased from 20°C to 30°C. Developmental thresholds for the eggs, larvae, pupae and life cycle were estimated as 11.5, 13.3, 14.4 and 10.2°C, respectively. Thermal constants for the egg, larval and pupal stages were 45.9, 243.9 and 117.6 degree–days above the developmental thresholds, respectively. A thermal constant of 526.3 degree–days above a threshold of 10.2°C was estimated to be required for the life cycle. The size, measured as pupal weight, increased with rearing temperatures. The results of the present study showed that ca. 30oC is the optimal temperature for H. armigera development and growth. Helicoperva armigera may complete a maximum of 10–11 generations per year in Hanoi, Vietnam. The present results provide important informa- tion for predicting the field population phenology of H. armigera in Hanoi, Vietnam.

- Title: The Contribution of Farmers to Irrigation Management for Agricultural Production in The Red River Delta Vietnam
- Journal: Journal of Agriculture, Süleyman Demirel University, Turkey
- Author from VNUA:1. Nguyễn Thị Hải Ninh 2. Nguyễn Mậu Dũng
- Authors: Nguyen Thi Hai Ninh, Philippe Lebailly, Nguyen Mau Dung
- Abstract:
In the Red River delta Vietnam, farm performance is dependent on the availability of water provided by public irrigation. With a well constructed irrigation system, farmers can increase their income by cultivating three crops per year. Hence participating in irrigation system management is necessary to improve their living. The aims of this paper are to examine the contribution of farmers to irrigation control for sustainable agricultural production. By analyzing primary data which is collected from the survey of 60 farm households, we discovered that irrigation management in this delta consists of several activities such as canals dredging, damaged canals repairing, checking the flow of water in canals and water pumping. In general, farmers contribute to these activities in two ways either in cash or working days. Around 70 percent of farmers contribute money to canal dredging and repairing annually, the rest are poorer so they support by their working days. Our regression model indicates that household income, the contribution of their neighbors, and frequency of attending social events in the community are main factors which statistically significant affect on farmers’ contribution. Therefore, promoting the contribution of farmers to irrigation management is an appropriate policy that needs to be implemented.

- Title: Endothelium-independent and calcium channel-dependent relaxation of the porcine cerebral artery by different species and strains of turmeric
- Journal: Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine.
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Thanh Hà (TY)
- Authors: JesminAkter, Md Zahorul Islam, Md Amzad Hossain, Shinsuke Kawabata, KensakuTakara, Ha Thi Thanh Nguyen, De-Xing Hou, Atsushi Miyamoto
- Abstract:
In addition, propranolol(anon-specificβ-adrenoceptor antagonist) slightly inhibited the relaxation induced by turmeric. In contrast, Nω-nitro-L-arginine, indomethacin, tetraethylammonium, glibenclamide and 4-aminopyridine did not affect turmeric-induced relaxation.
Conclusion
These results demonstrated that turmeric induced endothelium-independen trelaxation of the porcine basilar artery, which may be due to the inhibition of extracellular and intracellular Ca2+ receptors and the partial inhibition of β-adrenergic receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells.

- Title: Understanding the Stakeholders’ Involvement in Utilizing Municipal Solid Waste in Agriculture through Composting: A Case Study of Hanoi, Vietnam
- Journal: Sustainability
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Thu Phương
- Authors: Le Nam Phong, Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, Zhu Dajian
- Abstract:
Although the involvement of stakeholders is believed to be the key to the success of sustainable municipal waste management, the specific features of stakeholders, as well as their interdependence, have been under-researched. This study employed a multilevel governance approach to understand the manner in which different types of stakeholder networks interact with one another and how their roles should be reinforced. A combination of stakeholder analysis (SA) and social network analysis (SNA) was employed to investigate the perspective of stakeholders in utilizing municipal solid waste (MSW) in agriculture in Hanoi, Vietnam. SA indicated that the local authorities take the main responsibility for the management of MSW in Hanoi. Although other stakeholders express a significant interest in recycling MSW through composting, many of them do not have sufficient power to make any changes to the current system. SNA revealed the fragmentation of the network, as the coordination among the stakeholders is dominated by hierarchical governance, while there is a lack of horizontal cooperation among the sectors. The fragmentation could be attributed to weak legislative framework, lack of trust, financial constraints, and the limited participation of private enterprises. The governance of MSW use in agriculture should be executed through interdependency rather than hierarchy and through a network comprising both state and non-state actors.

- Abstract:
Rumen protozoa produce hydrogen, which can be utilised by methanogens to produce enteric methane (CH4) that is a loss of digested energy and has an adverse environmental impact as a greenhouse gas. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the absence of rumen protozoa on pasture intake, ruminal fermentation and enteric CH4production and performance of grazing sheep. An incomplete crossover experiment was conducted with eleven crossbred ewes (6 without [defaunated] and 5 with protozoa [refaunated]) on 2 ×2 ha pastures with daily CH4production (DMP) being measured by GreenFeed Emission Monitoring (GEM) units. Grazing defaunated sheep exhibited a lower concentration of rumen ammonia (P= 0.01), but similar concentrations of total rumen volatile fatty acids compared to refaunated sheep (P> 0.05). The molar proportion of acetate was decreased and butyrate proportion was increased by defaunation, while the proportion of propionate was un-changed. Estimated pasture intake was not different between defaunated and refaunated sheep (P> 0.05). Defaunated sheep tended to have a higher total dry matter intake (tDMI;P=0.06), being the sum of pasture
intake and pellet supplement intake. There was a tendency towards a lower CH4yield (g CH4/kg tDMI;P= 0.07) in defaunated sheep, but no differences in average daily gain or wool growth occurred due to defaunation.

- Title: Marker-Assisted Selection of Xa21 Conferring Resistance to Bacterial Leaf Blight in indica Rice Cultivar LT2
- Journal: Rice Science
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Việt Long
- Authors:
- Abstract:
Bacterial leaf blight of rice (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, is one of the most destructive diseases in Asian rice fields. A high-quality rice variety, LT2, was used as the recipient parent. IRBB21, which carries the Xa21 gene, was used as the donor parent. The resistance gene Xa21 was introduced into LT2 by marker-assisted backcrossing. Three Xoo races were used to inoculate the improved lines following the clipping method. Eleven BC3F3 lines carrying Xa21 were obtained based on molecular markers and agronomic performance. The 11 lines were then inoculated with the three Xoo races. All the 11 improved lines showed better resistance to BLB than the recipient parent LT2. Based on the level of resistance to BLB and their agronomic performance, five lines (BC3F3 5.1.5.1, BC3F3 5.1.5.12, BC3F3 8.5.6.44, BC3F3 9.5.4.1 and BC3F3 9.5.4.23) were selected as the most promising for commercial release. These improved lines could contribute to rice production in terms of food security.

The different feeds made from locally available ingredients in mountainous region in North of Vietnam was tested on Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) to access the utilization and cost efficiency of feeds under field conditions. Based on the tested results of locally available ingredients from Northern Vietnam under laboratory condition (Tuan et al., 2017), triplicates of four feeds: control (fish meal based diet) and three pond feed (PF1, PF2, PF3) in which proximately 75% of CP derived from locally plant protein. Homogenize size of 45 fish (average 85.9 ± 5.7 g) were stocked in each net (3x3x1.5m) and lasted for 10 weeks. Fish were fed twice a day with level of 5 times maintenance requirement. Growth of fish was measured every 10 days after 24 hours of starvation. At the end of experiment, all fish were measured for standard length and weight, of which, 5 fish were randomly selected to measured weight of liver, weight and length of intestine and to determine chemical compositions. Results showed that although low cost feed did not give the best growth of fish, they still had high potential when they could lead to lower cost of feed as well as lower cost per unit of fish weight produced. If components of this diet are changed to meet EAA requirements, fish culture in this region may become more profitable.

- Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to analyze the problem and obstacle of beef cattle production based on the factors of age of farmers, educational background, and farm size. The purposive samples used by a questionnaire were 120 farmers in Ban Dong subdistrict, Chat Trakan district, Phitsanulok province, Thailand. The considering factors were statistically tested. Least square means were calculated and used to compare the studied traits. The results revealed that age and educational background of farmers did not have a statistical effect on the problem and obstacle in breed and breeding, feed and feeding, disease and disease prevention, marketing, and knowledge and technology of beef cattle production (P>0.05). On the other hand, farm size did have an effect. Disease and disease prevention, and marketing of beef cattle production were varied across the
farm size (P<0.05). However, considering the farm sizes, it was found that the medium and large farms had different (P<0.05) problems and obstacles in disease and disease prevention andmarketing of beef cattle production from the small farms, but no difference between medium and large farms. These results implied that to improve efficiency of beef cattle production at different farm size requires the different strategies.

- Abstract:
Water stress effects on the growth and physiology of three coffee species, arabica, robusta, and liberica, were investigated. Unlike in plants that had water supply, plant height, leaf length, and leaf width values decreased significantly in arabica and liberica in a water deficit condition but did not statistically differ in robusta coffee plants. The highest values of reduction in growth characteristics of coffee plants under water deficit condition were observed in arabica, but they did not significantly differ from those in robusta or liberica. The highest value of relative water content in a water deficit condition was observed in liberica, but it was similar to that of robusta.
The SPAD value and Fv/Fm of all coffee species decreased significantly during the period without irrigation but increased significantly after re-watering. SPAD values of robusta and liberica in a water deficit condition were higher than those of arabica. The highest value of relative ion leakage during drought was observed in arabica. On the other hand, robusta generally appeared to be more vigorous than arabica and liberica, as shown by its relatively lower percentage of wilting plants and higher percentage of recovering plants.

- Title: The influence of lameness and individuality on movement patterns in sheep
- Journal: Journal of Behavioural Processes
- Author from VNUA:Nguyễn Thị Dương Huyền
- Authors: Amanda AK. HortonBJ, Nguyen T.D.Huyen, Ballagh CK, Corkrey R, Hinch GN
- Abstract:
We investigated how individuality and lameness altered social organisation by assessing food-directed movement patterns in sheep. One hundred and ninety-six mature Merino ewes were walked in 16 different runs around a 1.1 km track following a food source. Flock position and lameness were measured and temperament was assessed using an Isolation Box Test. The mean value for the correlations of position between a run and the run preceding it was r = 0.55 ± SEM 0.03. All correlations between runs were positive (r = 0.08–0.76) and all but two were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The weakest and least statistically significant correlations were for run 14: where all 16 runs were conducted approximately 3 times a week, except with an interval of 20 weeks between runs 13 and 14. Additionally, there were differences in overall positions for a lame versus a non-lame individual (all P < 0.05) with lame sheep being further back in position when compared to their non-lame mean positions. These results indicate the movement patterns, as measured by flock position during a food-directed forced movement order are relatively stable provided tests occur frequently, possibly on a bi-weekly basis. However, further work will be required to better account for individual animal variation.

- Abstract:
Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) of rice is one of the most destructive diseases affecting rice fields. Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is the causal agent of BLB. Two BLB resistance genes, Xa21 and Xa7, were transferred into the susceptible indica cultivar Bacthom7 (BT7) by using marker-assisted selection with markers pTA248 for Xa21 and ID7 for Xa7. Improved BT7 lines carrying the two resistance genes were inoculated with three isolates of the Xoo from Northern Vietnam and evaluated for agronomic traits. Artificial inoculation of 13 lines with three Xoo races identified nine highly resistant lines with wide-spectrum resistance to Xoo, including D1, D2, D3, D6, D7, D8, D9, D10 and D12. These lines were similar to recurrent parent BT7 with regard to external appearance, yield performance and grain quality. On the basis of agronomic traits and the level of resistance to BLB, two promising lines, D6 and D9 were further selected. These two lines could efficiently contribute to rice production for food security and food safety in northern Vietnam.

This study presents the high prevalence of antibiotic resistance of Salmonella and E. coli among selected pig farms and slaughterhouses in three
provinces and two cities in North Vietnam. Salmonella and E. coli were mostly isolated from the sewage, anus feces, caecum, slaughterhouse's floors, animal keeping floors, piggery floors, and carcass samples. The prevalence of Salmonella was 14.0% and 40.9%, and meanwhile, E. coli were 68.2% and 67.2% of the collected samples at the pig farms and slaughterhouses, respectively. Among the 189 Salmonella isolates, 179 isolates were serotypeable belong to 10 serovars. Derby (21.7%) was the most common serovar, followed by Typhimurium (18.5%),Anatum (14.3%), Rissen (12.2%) and London (8.5%). The other serovars were Agona, Weltevreden, Meleagridis, Braenderup, and Chartres. Resistance to streptomycin (81.5% and 78.0%), tetracycline (78.3% and 89.0%), and ampicillin (55.6% and 64.0%) were most commonly observed in Salmonella and E. coli , respectively. Markedly lower resistance rates were observed in both these bacteria for trimethoprim, nalidixic acid, ceftazidime, norfloxacin, nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin. Interestingly, decreased susceptibility to quinolones group (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and nalidixic acid) and third -generation cephalosporins (ceftazidime) was commonly detected in the Salmonella and E. coli isolates. Moreover, resistance rates of the E. coli isolate to trimethoprim, norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin were significantly higher than those in the Salmonella isolates (p<0.05).
