Since the beginning of 2013, the epidemic has unprecedentedly occurred in 6 provinces including Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, and Bac Ninh. The Department of Animal Health reported that the PRRS outbreak of 2013 was more erratic than that in 2012 at very fast spread resulting in a large number of infected pigs. As a consequence, the proportion of dead pigs and infected pigs to be destroyed reached up to 18,452 heads. PRRS virus strains belonging to North American strain(group II), so called VR-2332,has been found in Vietnam since 2007.  In 2013, a mutant PRRS virus strain identified was relatively similar to the one found in China and has not completely protected by current vaccines.

Under this context, the full genome of blue ear virus strains isolated in Vietnam with 15,350 bp in length was sequenced successfully by PRRS vaccine researchers of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in ISO 17025: 2005  Key Laboratory of Veterinary Biotechnology- a representative Lab of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development led by Assoc. Prof. Dr.  Nguyen Thi Lan. This first time remarkable result has significantly contributed to the identification of the right virus strains for vaccine production against PRRS. This full genome has been registered on World Gene Bank and become gene reference for PRRS related studies.
