On October 31, 2023, the University of Tasmania (UTAS, Australia) and partners in Vietnam (National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), Center for Rural Development in Central Vietnam, Hue University (CRD)) organized a workshop to launch the Project "Integrating smallholder households and farm production systems into commercial beef supply chains in Vietnam" (Project AGB/2020/189) in Hanoi. Project AGB/2020/189 is implemented by the University of Tasmania, Australia and partners in Vietnam from 2023 - 2026, and funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). In Vietnam, the Department of Quantitative Analysis (belonging to the strong research group Economic Linkage and Market Development), Faculty of Economics and Rural Development, Vietnam National University of Agriculture is one of the main partners. Research members on the Vietnamese side of the Project include staff from the Faculty of Economics and Rural Development, Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Center for Rural Development in Central Vietnam, Hue University (CRD).

The goal of the Project is to improve and enhance the linkages between livestock farmers, businesses and actors in the beef cattle supply chain in Australia and Vietnam, and through accessing business models to improve the livelihoods of livestock farmers participating in the commercial beef supply chain in Vietnam.

The project kick-off workshop has been held on October 31st, 2023 in Hanoi, to introduce an activities overview, implementation plan, partners involved in the AGB/2020/189 project in Vietnam, and establish a detail plan to implement project AGB/2020/189 in the coming months in Vietnam. Along with attendance of project participants from Vietnamese and Australian project partners, there were also a number of representatives from different organizations such as the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in Vietnam, departments, agencies, research institutes of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Departments of the provinces and cities of Hanoi, Thai Binh, Dien Bien, Quang Binh, and businesses with related to beef cattle farming and marketing such as De Heus - Vietnam, T&T 159 Hanoi, research organizations in Vietnam and Australia (MLA, DFAT Vietnam, Focus Group Consulting, University of Queensland ,…). Representative of the research team from Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), Associate Professor, PhD. Pham Van Hung, Project Partner Leader (of VNUA), presented experience in projects related to researching the beef cattle value chain, building and developing the value chain, and linking farmers with businesses, and suggestions for projects. The workshop also spent time discussing project implementation methods, outputs, interventions, project planning and exchange and learning among members.
