On November 6-10, 2017, the Faculty of Animal Science, Vietnam National University of Agriculture in collaboration with Taiwan Livestock Research Institute (TLRI) and the Department of Livestock Production (DLP) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Vietnam, successfully held a seminar on “Boar Semen Application for Pork Quality Improvement” at the university in Hanoi, Vietnam.

There were 20 theme speakers and country reporters coming from Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition, there were around 100 participants, including scientists, managers, lecturers, researchers, and technicians from the above mentioned countries; while Vietnam’s participants were researchers and lecturers of Vietnam National University of Agriculture and Thuy Phuong Pig Research Center, the National Institute of Animal Sciences; technicians from Dabaco Nucleus Breeding Pig Company, Lac Ve Breeding Pig Co., Ltd, Investment and Development Breed Processing Co., Ltd - Dabaco Group; Thai Duong Company, and Hai Duong Livestock Breeding Center.

After the welcome speech of the donor, Dr. Kuo-Ching Lin, director of the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) for the Asian and Pacific Region, highly evaluated the development of livestock production sector in general and pig production in particular. He also expressed his attitude to VNUA for the collaboration in organizing this seminar.

Dr. Hoang Thanh Van, director of the Department of Livestock Production, briefly summarized the most recent achievements of pig production in Vietnam, and mentioned major challenges for Vietnam’s animal production sector.

Delivering opening remarks at the seminar, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Trach, VNUA’s vice president, warmly welcomed and expressed the university’s honor of having an opportunity to organize the seminar for the first time with the participation of a large number of participants from Vietnam and  other Southeast Asian countries. He also emphasized that this seminar provided an valuable opportunity for the university lecturers, researchers, and students to develop research networks in pig production, thereby contributing to the promotion and strengthening of the university position as well as the enhancement of the cooperation of the university with other partners in the region and in the world.

The seminar was a forum for researchers, lecturers, managers and technicians to share their experiences in boar semen application for quality pork production from Taiwan to the young generation of farmers in Vietnam, along with the participation of invited experts from ASEAN nations, a humble contribution to tropical pig production under climate change can be made through cost reduction of breeding stocks and pork quality improvement in ASEAN countries.

At this seminar, presentations brought about practical values for the application of artificial insemination techniques in pig breed selection to improve pork quality.   

Seminar participants also witnessed the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement between the Department of Livestock Production, MARD, Vietnam and the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center, Taiwan.
