VNUA attended the Kick off Meeting of Greater Mekong Sub-region University Consortium and the Academic Credit Transfer Framework for Asia Project in Vientiane, Lao PDR

Over two days from 8 and 9 July 2015, VNUA’s representatives attended the Kick off Meeting of Greater Mekong Sub-region University Consortium (GMS-UC) and the Academic Credit Transfer Framework for Asia (ACTFA) Project hosted by the SEAMEO RIHED in Vientiane, Laos PDR with the support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Meeting was attended by Directors General/Secretary General of Higher Education in GMS countries, Presidents/Rectors or their deputies, and officials responsible for student exchange and/or credit transfer management of the 23 government nominated universities from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, China, and Japan.

Over the course of the Meeting, key points on the role of national governments in the establishment of the GMS-UC and the development of Academic Credit Transfer Framework for Asia, current context and the need of credit transfer implementation in the region, opportunities and challenges for universities and enterprises in the GMS-UC, experiences and lessons learnt of universities of Thailand, the Philippines and Japan in executing academic credit transfer programs were presented.

After intensive discussions to reach a consent on GMS-UC mechanism, representatives from 23 participating universities signed a Joint Declaration to form a GMS University Consortium for Collaboration and Excellence as witnessed by the SEAMEO RIHED, the ADB and the Ministry of Education and Sports Laos. The ADB continued its support for higher education activities such as workshops, trainings, and seminars in order to complete the ACTFA which shall include issues of credit exchange, student exchange, development of training programs and collaborative research in the areas of agriculture, food technology, engineering arts, and environmental studies.
