Israeli Culture Day at Vietnam National University of Agriculture

On 23 November 2015, an Israeli Cultural Day, as part of the Israel Cultural Week in Vietnam, was held by Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel in Vietnam to introduce its diverse and colorful culture to students.Attending the event , from Israeli side, were Ms. Meirav Eilon Shahar, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel in Vietnam together with her staff, from VNUA side, were Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trach, Vice President, Ms. Do Thi Kim Huong, Secretary of the Youth Union, Ms. Le Thi Bich Lien, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office, Mr. Nguyen Tat Thang, Deputy Director of the Political & Student Affairs and more than one thousand of students.International symposium on “Impacts of land use changes on the soil and water quality and rural environment in Vietnam and Japan”

In order implement activities realizing the Development Strategy of the Science and Technology in the period of 2011-2016 of the Faculty of Land Management (FLM), Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), and under its cooperation framework with the Faculty of Agriculture (FOA), Institute of Tropical Agriculture (ITA), Kyushu University (KU), Japan, an International Symposium on “Impacts of land use changes on the soil and water quality and rural environment in Vietnam and Japan” was organized on 21 November 2015 at VNUA with the aims of identifying related emerging issues and figuring out appropriate solutions for land use, land management, rural environmental protection, as well as agricultural production at present and in the future.Prof.Dr. Kazuaki Hiramatsu, Dean of the FOA, Prof.Dr. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Director of the ITA, and KU experts attended the Symposium. On VNUA’s side, Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Vien, Chair of the Board of Trustee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tat Canh, Vice President, and Assoc. On 16 November, 2015, the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) successfully organized a seminar on "Achievements of scientific research in the field of agricultural engineering in 2015" with the aim to review remarkable scientific activities in the 2014-2015 period and present notable research findings of the faculty. The seminar was also a venue for the faculty to discuss and exchange new ideas for further research development, as well as honor excellent faculties of the year. It directed research themes in the coming period too.Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Le Minh Lu, Dean of the FOE emphasized the importance of science and technology in agricultural engineering and stated that the FOE always highly recognizes the contribution and efforts of the faculty for the science and technology development of the FOE as well of the university. On 22 October 2015, a delegation of University College Cork, Ireland (UCC) led by Dr. Christopher Brown, Director of the International Office paid an official visit to Vietnam National University of Agriculture. Welcoming the delegation were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Trach, Vice President together with representative leaders of the Faculties of Economics and Rural Development, Accounting and Business Management, Food Science and Technology, and the International Cooperation Office.Assoc. From 13rd to 17th October 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan, Acting President of Vietnam National University of Agriculture was very honored to be one of distinguished guests at the 25th Anniversary of the United Graduate School of Veterinary Science, Yamaguchi University, Japan .Over the past years, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan has made significant contributions to the development of international educational and research cooperation with foreign partners particularly with Japanese academic institutions. Since 2013, she has been a visiting professor at the University of Miyazaki in the veterinary field focusing on cross-border transmission of diseases. Recently, on her new position as Acting President of VNUA, she has intensively boosted interactive activities with partners to enhance capacity for VNUA’s faculty e.g. sending staff to study abroad, extending joint research with focus in the field of veterinary medicine, and animal science, etc.Seminar on ASEAN – Japan Partnership on Food Value Chain and Job Fair for Food Sciences and Technology Students

During 7th and 8th October 2015, Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) hosted a Seminar on ASEAN – Japan Partnership on Food Value Chain and a Job Fair for Food Sciences and Technology students in the framework of the project "Human Resource Development in Food-Related Areas through Partnership with Universities in ASEAN Region", executed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam. Mr. Katsuro NAGAI, the Envoy of the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam attended the Seminar. It was also honored to receive the participation of the project coordinator at ASEAN Secretariat, representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and food enterprises both in Japan and Vietnam. Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (SAKURA Exchange Program in Science) is the program for enhancing exchanges between Asia and Japan of the youths who will play a crucial role in the future field of science and technology through the close collaboration of industry-academia-government by facilitating short-term visits of competent Asian youths to Japan. This program aims at raising the interest of Asian youths toward the leading Japanese science and technologies at Japanese universities, research institutions and private companies. Based on the MOU between the University of Miyazaki (UOM) and Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) in research and training in agricultural fields, the SAKURA Exchange Program in Science 2015 was organized for the young staffs and students from VNUA at UOM under the leading of Prof. Yamaguchi Ryoji, who honorably received the campaign medal for the cause of agriculture and rural development of Vietnam in 2014. Ten representative lecturers, researchers and students from Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) attended this Program from 25 September to 4 October 2015.Under the Program, participants took part in various activities such as visiting Meguro Parasitological Museum, the National Museum of Science and Innovation, attending the Orientation Program at the Center for International Relations, doing practices at Labs of X-Ray Optics, Microbiology, Epidemiology, and Pathology, visiting the Veterinary Hospital and the Center for Animal Disease Control (CADIC) of the UOM.Particularly, on this occasion Vietnam and Japan joint Symposium of Infections Diseases Control for Livestock was co-organized by the UOM, Miyazaki Prefecture, and VNUA. Attending the Symposium was Prof. Toshiaki Itami, Vice President (UOM), Dr. Masahito Suiko, Executive Director (UOM), Prof. Yamaguchi Ryoji, Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, (UOM), Mr. Hiroyuki Miura, Deputy Director of Livestock Disease Prevention Division, and Mr. Shigehisa Sakoh, Director of Business Management Division. In addition, the Symposium was very honored to receive the attendance of 11 representative leaders and senior officials from the Ministry of Development and Rural Development, Vietnam who were attending their training course on capacity building and human resources management at the UOM and other institutions in Japan.The Symposium shed a light on emerging infectious diseases and their economic damages in Japan and Vietnam such as foot and mouth disease. The Symposium also provided the participants with better understanding on cultural characteristics of the two countries through a brief introduction about Japan and Vietnam.Assoc. On 8 October 2015, in Hanoi, the Presidium of the Central Council of Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), briefly called Vietnam Union, held the Conference of Patriotic Emulation and Outstanding Science and Technology Intellectuals Award - VUSTA 2015"The Conference reviewed achievements in the patriotic emulation movement and honored Outstanding Science and Technology Intellectuals of the period 2010 – 2015. Also, the Conference aimed at acknowledging the role of emulation and commendation, stimulating initiatives, and applied research and technologies to serve the national industrialization and modernization process.Attending the Conference were representatives of the Presidium of the Central Council of Vietnam Union, and relevant departments, especially 51 outstanding intellectuals nationwide. Vietnam National University of Agriculture has received international students since 1960. Sine then, VNUA has always created best conditions for their living and studying despite of its own difficulties. One of international cooperation strategies of VNUA is to attract more international students to pursue their higher education at VNUA. Therefore, VNUA has seen an increase in the number of international students both long term and short term. Currently, the number of long term international students is about 129 from 4 countries including Laos, Cambodia, Mozambique and Angola. The number of international students participating in short-term exchange programs (credit exchange, short-term training, interns, research fellows) are about hundreds of students each year. In order to create a playground for international students at the university, a Cultural Night was held on 21 August 2015.The World Bank's Country Director for Vietnam visited Vietnam National University of Agriculture.

On 19 August, 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Thi Lan, Vice President of Vietnam National University of Agriculture warmly welcomed Ms. Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank's Country Director for Vietnam on her first official visit to the university.At the reception, Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Thi Lan expressed her delight at meeting Director Victoria Kwakwa and appreciated the WB’s support to Vietnam and her great contribution to the country’s poverty reduction and renovation cause over the past time. Assoc. Prof. Dr Lan took this opportunity to present an overview of VNUA and its development strategy from 2015 to 2020.Ms. Victoria Kwakwa highly valued the role of the university in the development of agriculture in Vietnam and emphasized that VNUA has not only provided human resources but also produced remarkable scientific results for agriculture and rural development of Vietnam. Its reliable findings and policy recommendations have been utilized as fundamentals for decisions and policies of the MARD and the Government. She also expressed sincerely her opinions about higher education reform in Vietnam today and expected to more appropriate policies to exploit effectively abundant source of knowledge especially in the agricultural sector of Vietnam .
